Add to basketHardcover. Condition: New. The book deals with about 200 plants being used by the tribal and rural folk in India for curing diseases, Over 2000 plants are actually reported in literature as medicinal and large number of them are now widely used and described in modem pharmacopoeias, textbooks of Ayurveda and Unani and in books on medicinal plants. The authors have compared the recent data on folk medicine with textbooks as dealt in the present book only with such plants as are not well known and should be subjected to photochemical toxicity and clinical tests, etc., for their medicinal potential. A review of literature on the chemistry and pharmacology of several species has also been given. The data on each species includes full botanical name, family, brief description, local name, general distribution in India, time of flowering and fruiting. The book should be particulary useful for pharmacologists ad clinical researchers for selecting new problems of work. Over 50 species are illustrated.

From the preface: During the last ten years many books have come up to serve as text books or guides for concept scope methodology and practical utility of ethnobotany. Almost all of them are by authors who live in developed countries but have worked in far off locations and among technologically less developed people very different from their own traditions language and culture. Thus, many concepts suggestions for estabilishing communication with the indigenous people infrastructual and transport facilities and even financial or other resources available to them do not always match or suit on the ground situation in India. This handbook draws from the personal experience of authors over three decades (ca five decades for SKJ) and of course on the useful and relevant published material particularly the lectures given during training courses organised by society of ethnobotanists.

Currently ethnobotany has been a subject of wide interest for research in developing and developed countries. It has also been incorporated as a part of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in several universities in India and several other countries. Many Indian scientific organizations/funding agencies have recognized ethnobiology as an important thrust area under their R&D programmes. Being a tribal dominated country, the scope of this subject becomes much more in India. A large number of ethnobiological aspects have been studied in India during the last five decades, including the inventories of a large number of medicinal plants, phytochemical analyses of a good number of species, traditional conservational methods etc. In spite of various studied aspects, still a lacuna was felt regarding emerging and new trends which could provide some new directions to researchers in this subject. The present book is an effort in this direction. The book has been dedicated to the doyen of Indian ethnobiology, Dr. S.K. Jain, FNA, popularly known as 'Father of Indian Ethnobotany'. The book comprises very important articles written by notable ethnobiologists/botanists on different aspects of ethnobotany. Since ethnobotany is considered to be incomplete without knowledge of taxonomy, therefore, some thought provoking articles on taxonomy are also given.

Global food demand is expected to be doubled by 2050, while production, environment and natural resources are shrinking and deteriorating. Inadequate attention to agriculture across the larger part of the world has led to steep rise in food prices and increased food riots pushing about 100 million more people into poverty. More than one billion people already are earning less than one dollar a day, and 842 million are suffering from hunger. The climate change and diversion of arable lands to urbanization and industrialization has further aggravated food crisis. On the other hand, with recent technologies, there is tremendous development in agriculture and productivity during the last two decades and it is hoped that with ingenuity, determination and innovative partnerships among everyone, we can meet the food needs of 9 billion people by 2050 without harming our planet. Using tools and technologies that allow farmers to apply nutrients more precisely at lower cost, improved seeds with less water and nutrients, new fertilizers, site specific nutrient management, effectively placed wetlands and buffers, and cover crops, we can meet the intertwined needs of environmental sustainability and rising food demand. However, all these informations are scattered and need to be compiled and circulated widely. This book "Recent Advances in Crop Physiology Vol. 1" is an effort in this direction, which will act as a reference for directly implementing the technologies and to help the researchers for planning their future research.

The human body contains 20 times more microbes than it does cells and in each cell there are about 10 microbes. Approximately 99% of the viruses and bacteria inhabiting our body are yet to be identified. Some of our colonists viruses in the cells of our brain influence even our thoughts and feelings. This book illustrates how microbes and human life go hand in hand. Microbes for Human Life elaborates the relevance of microbes and their role in everyday human life microbes in food production and agriculture in biotechnology and industry and in ecology and environment. It also discusses some of the negative impacts of microbes on our world such as their role in causing diseases and bio terrorism. But the primary focus is on how microbes in their incredible variety are essential to human life. The book presents the many ways in which we intentionally and at times unintentionally utilize microbes to improve our lives and enhance our life experience. 678 pp.
