Trade Paperback. Condition: Used - Like New. In 1926, highway planners laid out a ribbon of roadways connecting the nation. One of the most important wove its way across eight states, from the cities of the heartland to golden California. In The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck calls it the Mother Road. Route 66 has become a legend, celebrated in books, movies, works of art, and popular music. The interstates could not kill it. As the Main Street of America, Route 66 had to pass through the Gateway to the West, St. Louis. Crossing the Mississippi River, the road took many different paths through the busy city and then united to travel into the rolling hills of the Ozarks. Along the way there were mom-and-pop motels, tourist traps, roadside restaurants, a man selling frozen custard, one living with snakes, and another who claimed to be Jesse James. Their stories are here.'.

Robert Indiana (1928-2018) has created some of the world's most immediately recognizable works of art. Filled with intensely personal combinations of universal symbols--numbers and letters, stars and wheels--they are most readily associated with the Pop art movement. Including extraordinary examples of his career-defining LOVE sculpture, one of the twentieth century's most iconic works of art, Robert Indiana: A Sculpture Retrospective offers a thorough reassessment of the artist's work in sculpture, from his earliest assemblages of the 1950s to his most recent series of remarkable painted bronzes. -- WorldCat.

Excerpt: Bob Dylan ( ; born Robert Allen Zimmerman; May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, author, poet and artist. He has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when he was an informal chronicler and a seemingly reluctant figurehead of social unrest. A number of Dylan's early songs, such as 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'The Times They Are a-Changin'', became anthems for the US civil rights and anti-war movements. Leaving his initial base in the culture of folk music behind, Dylan's six-minute single 'Like a Rolling Stone' has been described as radically altering the parameters of popular music in 1965. His recordings employing electric instruments attracted denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement. Dylan's lyrics incorporated a variety of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed hugely to the then burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the songs of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has both amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning fifty years, has explored many of the traditions in American song from folk, blues and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and swing. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but his greatest contribution is generally considered to be his songwriting. Since 1994, Dylan has published three books of drawings and paintings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. As a songwriter and musician, Dylan has received numerous awards over the years including Grammy, 208 pp. Englisch.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. A deep dive into the role that mass-appeal movies, television, videos, and music played in Donald Trumps failed reelection campaign, including brand-new interviews with some of the major players."The former personal manager for artists including Nirvana and Bonnie Raitt interviewed some of the most well-known performers who raised their voices against the former presidentincluding Bruce Springsteen, John Legend and Rosanne Cash, among othersfor his recently released book, Bloody Crossroads 2020: Art, Entertainment, and Resistance to Trump."The Hill"Bloody Crossroads 2020 is a riveting and thoughtful tour of the role artists played in resisting the horrors of the Trump presidency. Danny Goldberg provides a bracing and thorough recollection that is both a service and a reminder for artists to stay engaged and awake. To counter those who continually tell me to 'shut up and sing,' I will buy a couple of crates of this book and get my marching boots polished. Thank you, Danny, for reminding me how it went down, and where it might go."--Rosanne Cash"The people who produce our popular culture--the performers and makers of TV shows and movies and music and the rest--are nearly all on the political left. (Which drives the right crazy; crazier.) Danny Goldberg--impresario, activist, mensch--knowingly and passionately chronicles how and why more of his fellow culture-makers than ever enlisted in the fight to save American democracy in 2020. Our annus horribilis had a political happy ending, and Bloody Crossroads 2020 is its star-studded souvenir program."--Kurt Andersen, author of Evil Geniuses and FantasylandBloody Crossroads 2020 takes a deep dive into the role that mass-appeal movies, television, videos, and music played in America's political culture in the year of Donald Trump's failed reelection campaign. The book also explores the impact of entertainment celebrities in communications, fundraising, and campaigning to support the election of Joe Biden.Although there existed a decades-old tradition of "liberal Hollywood," Trump's ascension to the presidency in 2016 triggered an unprecedented level of engagement by artists and performers. Within days of the 2016 election, a critical mass of entertainers, from teenagers to the last survivors of the World War II generation--blockbuster movie stars, art-film auteurs, Broadway dramatists, comedians, and musicians from the worlds of classical, country, pop, rock, R&B, and hip-hop--all seemed to have heard the tom-tom beat of resistance at the same moment and amplified a moral alternative to Trumpism. That level of engagement intensified with rare passion and purpose in the period of 2020 chronicled in Bloody Crossroads 2020--the Democratic primaries, the COVID-19 pandemic, the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd, the conviction of sexual predator Harvey Weinstein, and the 2020 general election campaign--culminating in Trump's failed insurrection.Exhaustively researched, Bloody Crossroads 2020 draws from brand-new interviews with Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, Rosanne Cash, David Simon, Adam McKay, Chuck D, David Corn, Mandy Patinkin, and many more. It also explores the important political activities of entertainers like Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, Alyssa Milano, Mark Ruffalo, Jane Fonda, Robert De Niro, Bette Midler, Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee, Ava DuVernay, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and Wanda Sykes.Bloody Crossroads 2020 expertly dissects and celebrates how the empowering actions of artists and entertainers helped a record turnout of everyday citizens realize a triumphant 2020 election. A deep dive into the role that mass-appeal movies, television, videos, and music pl Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

What Bill Mauldin and "Willie and Joe" were to World War Two G.I.s, "Wally" Wallgren and his "Helpful Hints" cartoons in "Stars and Stripes" were to World War One doughboys, for both poked fun and army life, army chores, army regulations and the drudgery of military life; Wallgren served with the 5th Marines in the First Division in France, after the war collecting his cartoons into the popular "Wally: His Cartoons of the A.E.F." in 1919; later he cartooned for "American Legion Magazine" and then had another strip called "Hoosegow Herman." Original cartoon in black ink, signed simply "W" at lower right, heavy stock 7" X 3¼" sheet, n.p., n.y. [Wallgren's Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania home address lightly inkstamped on verso). Near fine. Charming scene -- perhaps a "Helpful Hunts" installment -- depicting two soldiers side by side at a table, the G.I. at left showing the G.I. at right how to open a bottle of French wine. "See!!" he says as he thumps the underside of the bottle and the cork strikes with a "Pop" in his friend's eye. Cream 8½" X 6½" mat with 5¼" X 2½" opening. Wallgren's early work is surprisingly scarce, and this is a delightful example.

Imogene is young, beautiful. and dead, waiting in the Rosebud Theater one afternoon in 1945. Francis was human once, but now he's an eight-foot-tall locust, and everyone in Calliphora will tremble when they hear him sing. John is locked in a basement stained with the blood of half a dozen murdered children, and an antique telephone, long since disconnected, rings at night with calls from the dead. Arthur Roth is a lonely kid with big ideas and a gift for attracting abuse. Nolan knows but can never tell what really happened in the summer of '77, when his idiot savant younger brother built a vast cardboard fort with secret doors leading into other worlds. The past isn't dead. It isn't even past. Magazine. Condition: Very Good+. (Vol. 1, Nos. 1-8; Vol. 2, Nos. 1-4). [all issues in at least VG condition, many better than that; occasional bumping to upper or lower corners of a few issues, last issue in volume has some wear and slight creasing along right edge of front cover; the cream-colored binder (with "SHOW BUSINESS ILLUSTRATED" and "SBI" embossed in gold on the front cover and spine, respectively) is lightly soiled but in generally excellent condition]. (B&W & color photographs, cartoons, illustrations) A complete run (all twelve issues) of "Playboy" publisher Hugh Hefner's short-lived effort to spin off his magazine's showbiz features into a regular publication devoted to covering "the entire spectrum of show business," which it regarded as "an industry, a triumph of communication, a world-wide style and, not least of all, the common denominator of a new world-wide culture." Ambitious indeed, with stated intentions of covering everything from movies, TV and theatre to circuses and classical-music concerts; it bit off a lot, and in the end couldn't manage to chew it all: it ended its run, per an ad in the final issue, by being "incorporated into" "Show" magazine, Huntington Hartford's large-format publication with similar coverage, which had begun its run at almost the same time (October 1961); perhaps a case of survival of the fittest. (Although "Show," too, had a troubled publication history, and petered out by the mid-1970s.) Format-wise, SBI very much evoked the "Playboy" look and feel, utilizing similar typography, graphic layout, and features (there's even a jokes page) -- except, of course, without the nekkid ladies (although a regular feature was "Show Business Beauty," a no-nudity look at what amounted to a Starlet of the Month; most of these ladies' careers never amounted to much, although in its closing months both Senta Berger and Ursula Andress were highlighted). The magazine began as a bi-weekly, with the intention of providing "a handy, continuing guide to the current appearances, performances, and programs that are worth your valuable time and money," and maintained that publication schedule through its 9th issue (Jan. 23, 1962), before going monthly in February 1962, in what was probably a doomed attempt to salvage the enterprise. In its even dozen issues, though, it certainly presented a rich smorgasbord of quality arts/music/theatre/TV coverage. Here are just some of the dozens of articles and features of worthy and lasting value presented during its 7-month lifespan: a 2-part profile of Jack Paar, by Roger Kahn; a "Mister Magoo Looks at Show Business" cartoon feature; "A History of Jazz" by John S. Wilson (which appeared intermittently, in 5 parts); a 7-part serialized edition of the book "Little Me" by "Belle Poitrine" (Patrick Dennis); an article about JFK's "Presidential Preferences" in the arts; interviews with Mae West, Federico Fellini, Rod Serling, and others; a play, "The Explainers," written and illustrated by Jules Feiffer; a feature about the cinematic vision of Ingmar Bergman; a photo feature on Ernie Kovacs; a profile of comedian Dick Gregory, by Nat Hentoff; a 3-part profile of Judy Garland (rather weirdly referred to as "America's apparently indestructible girlfriend"), by James Goode; a feature on the 1927 opening of the Roxy Theatre in New York, with a colorful 2-page illustration by Andy Warhol; a review of "The Bullwinkle Show," by Jules Feiffer; "Three Faces of Fonda," a joint profile (with cover photo) of Henry, Jane and Peter; "Tallulah's Almanac; being a sampling of the wit and wisdom of the irrepressible Miss Bankhead"; the "Owl Awards," presented to the "Best of" just about everything during 1961 (there's a trivia-quiz question for you!); a 3-part autobiographical feature by David Susskind; "Confessions of a Celluloid-Eater," a posthumously-published piece by Gene Fowler; a cover story on Brigitte Bardot's "farewell to films"; a profile of comedian Bob Newhart, then in the midst of his first TV series; a feature on designer Saul Bass; a "New Faces" feature on Joan Baez; a profile of Marilyn Monroe by Joe Hyams, illustrated with exclusive photos of MM by Eve Arnold; a profile of Ray Charles, by Nat Hentoff; an article about old-time movie serials by (of all people) Charles Beaumont; a profile of Warren Beatty ("candid look at a cocky kook") by Joe Hyams; a profile of Akira Kurosawa; a transcript of a group discussion about TV westerns with "five television cowpokes" (Clint Eastwood, Lorne Greene, Jack Kelly, Robert Horton, and Dale Robertson); a profile of movie comedian Harold Lloyd (featuring a fantastic aerial photo of his Beverly Hills estate, "Greenacres"). It's worth noting that a frequent photography contributor was Richard Avedon, whose work appears in about half the issues (including a couple of really great photos of Sophia Loren and Judy Garland); other photographers whose work pops up here and there include Dennis Stock, Bob Willoughby, Lawrence Schiller, William Read Woodfield, Phil Stern, and John Launois. Miscellaneous contributors not mentioned above were: Marc Connelly, Arthur Knight, Drew Pearson, Joe Hyams, David Brinkley, Harold Clurman, and cartoonist Gahan Wilson. The issues vary in length from 80 to 156 pages, with most falling in the 80-to-100-page range. NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy volume. (Also NOTE that the eight issues pictured in the second photo attached to this listing are *not* the actual copies for sale, but rather are additional loose copies of the same issues, the image offered only to give a sampling of the cover designs/contents.).

This is a highly worthwhile rarity since it represents the hardest to find format of Joe Hill's most important work FROM THE PUBLISHER: Cover, Endpapers, and Slipcase Art: Vincent Chong Anyone out there heard of this cat Joe Hill? Yeah, of course you have. And I ll bet ya heard of Joe s Ray Bradbury s Fellowship award for the story 20th Century Ghost and maybe you heard he also received the William L. Crawford award for best new fantasy writer in 2006, the A. E. Coppard Long Fiction Prize in 1999 for Better Than Home and the 2006 World Fantasy Award for Voluntary Committal . His stories have appeared in a variety of magazines, such as Postscripts, Subterranean Magazine and The High Plains Literary Review, and in many anthologies. Well, it s 10 years since, overloaded to the back teeth with projects, CD Head Honcho Richard Chizmar sent Joe our way to ask if PS might be interested in publishing his collection of tales, wrapped around the title of that Bradbury Fellowship story. On the night Joe responded to my suggestion that he send me his three best yarns. I read Ghost , Pop Art (sheer genius and containing a killer closing line) and, heck, you know, I don t recall the third one. I do recall dropping him a line first thing the next morning and asking for a phone number and I called and we spoke and we made a deal and, well, you know the rest 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS, GUNPOWDER, HORNS, plus a little something special just down the pike that we ll talk about a little later. But before that, just to re-whet your whistle, here s the 10th Anniversary edition of the book that started the ball rolling and which notched up in quick succession the World Fantasy Award, the British Fantasy Award, the International Horror Guild. • Seller image for Mini Archive of Letters, Postcards, Musings, Photos, and Slides of Art (Especially in the Deseret Alphabet) by Utah Outsider Artist and Musician Bob Moss for sale by Ken Sanders Rare Books, ABAA

Hand-written correspondence from Bob Moss to Patrick Eddington, (aka "Pat the Cat"), who was a Utah artist and former high school art teacher, who spent over two decades corresponding with numerous artists and authors. Each piece of correspondence is signed by Bob Moss at the foot. The archive includes: 1 handmade Christmas card. 1 postcard which is an advertisement for his exhibit at the Beehive Tea Room. 1 card to Patrick Eddington, in which Bob describes a cd he will be working on consisting of local history-oriented songs. He writes, "Nobody seems to want to help. No local hipster seems to want to do UTAH history songs. Ive [sic] written a very good one about J. Bracken Lee and an OK one on the Johnson [sic] Army Utah war." 1 four-page letter. 1 three-page letter. Page 2 of a two-page letter. 17 slides depicting various projects by the artist, including stoneware, collage, and ink on wood. Annotations by Bob Moss in the borders. 7 color photographs [4 x 6"] showcasing Bob Moss's unique creations. Three of the photographs show the artist displaying his work. Folk artist/musician Bob Moss (1953-2011) was born in Logan, Utah. He is most known for his wood-burned pieces that often featured the Deseret Alphabet, Brigham Young's unique phonetic Mormon language. Bob Moss did his first work in the Deseret Alphabet in 1989 for Joe Stetich's "Hatu Teresed." On his website, Bob points out that he has always emphasized his musical side. He has 5 cds out under his own name, another one produced as a group, and a sixth cd titled "Bob Moss Plays Frank Sinatra on his Five-String Banjo." The letters, full of personality and humor, consist entirely of Bob's unique musings and his honest views of life, as well as his art. When one reads these letters, one gets a small glimpse of the way in which Bob lived his life. According to his sister, Linda Hill, "Bob showed you what he chose to show. He lived on the fringe of polite society, and he was fiercely independent and true to himself." (The Salt Lake Tribune) In a letter to Patrick he writes, "I work pretty hard. Frankly Im [sic] totaly [sic] exhausted a lot. Still when I get home I make myself work on art. I'm trying to finish the color backboard to a woodburnt cut out beehive. But mostly Ive [sic] just been doing words. I figure some people might dig the Deseret Alphabet and would rather have lots of that. But its also somrthing I can manage to do when I'm Dog Tired." In another letter he muses, "My stuff is kind of goofy maybe. Ive [sic] met almost no one who shares any of my interest. Anyone elses [sic] interests are as valid as mine. But I have my path & I intend to keep on following it." Moss's obituary, published in "The Deseret News' closed with this poignant wish: "Instead of flowers, remember that the art of happiness is to serve all, and lend a helping hand to someone in need, or send a hand-written letter to someone you love." His artwork rests in the hands of his family, friends, and fans.
