Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Textual half is 333 p. while the plates making up the remaining half of the book are unpaginated. Usual ex-library markings, light edgewear and rubbing, with sunning to the top two inches of the back cover. Upper back corner slightly bumped. ?Despite the fact that colonial architecture and sculpture in Peru was first published 20 years ago, the text is still valid. The major additions to our knowledge since that time are the result of the systematic reading of the notarial archives of the city of Cuzco brought together in the Archivo Histórico del Cuzco ? The most important discoveries concern Diego Martinez de Oviedo who is established as the leading architect and sculptor of Cuzco in the second half of the 17th century, when the city was largely rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1650. Earlier known was the contract for the high altar and pulpit of the Church of Santa Teresa and related pulpits. In the newly discovered documents he is proved to have been the architect of the facade and towers of the Jesuit church, La Compañía, in 1964, thus putting an end to the former claim for a Jesuit, Padre Egediano. He must have also been the designer of the magnificent high altar of the same church, although the contract is missing, but its completion in 1670 is established by the agreement for gilding in that year. Furthermore, Diego Martinez de Oviedo is also shown to have been the architect (1663) of the celebrated cloister of La Merced at Cuzco. This master therefore becomes an even greater figure than hitherto suspected, an architect and sculptor whose advanced Baroque style was transplanted full blown to Cuzco, whence he must have come after having been born and educated in his profession in Spain. Another personality of the same period, Francisco Dominguez de Chavez y Arellano, about whom no precise information was formerly available, is now clarified as an architect and contractor, who agreed to build seventeen vaults of the cathedral (1649), to construct the apse and the transept and their vaults in the Church of San Francisco (1649), the Chapel of Loreto attached to La Compañía (1652), and to erect the choir of Santo Domingo (1663).? ? Preface to the Reprint Edition. Oversized book may require additional shipping.
