Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xxxii, 425, [7] pages. Autographed copy sticker on front of the DJ. Signed with author's sentiment that reads: "Best wishes, John Feinstein". An inside look at the world of major league baseball draws on interviews with the players, umpires, managers and coaches, owners, and others to discuss behind-the-scenes intrigues, financial manipulations, controversies, and personalities. John Feinstein (born July 28, 1956) is an American sportswriter, author and sports commentator. Feinstein has written 44 books. His book A Season on the Brink chronicles a year in the life of the Indiana University basketball team and its coach, Bob Knight. In 1995, he published A Good Walk Spoiled, about a year on the PGA Tour as told through the stories of 17 players. Feinstein has also written a sports-mystery series in which main characters Stevie Thomas and Susan Carol Anderson are reporting on major sporting events including the Final Four, US Open (tennis), Super Bowl, World Series, the Army-Navy Game, and the Summer Olympics. On March 8, 2012, Feinstein joined SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio channel, teaming up with Bruce Murray for the sports talk show, Beyond the Brink, which aired between 10:00 am - 2:00 p.m. ET. However, Feinstein left the show by the fall of 2012, as he was offered a slot of his own show on the brand new CBS Sports Radio between 9 AM to 12 noon ET. CBS Sports Radio began 24/7 all sports talk on January 2, 2013. On November 14, 2014, during an interview on a Washington, D.C. radio program, he announced that he had been fired by CBS from his daily radio show. Unlike any book before it, Play Ball takes on a national pasttimeâ"and baseball will never be the same again. Baseball is the greatest of all American games. No other sport has the tradition, the mythology, the heroes, and the heroics. Yet baseball is also in the midst of an upheaval unprecedented in its glorious history. Many of its traditions have been discarded, much of its mythology has been disproved, and too many of its heroes have entered drug clinics or let greed triumph over team spirit. What makes baseball what it isâ"the good as well as the bad? Who are the game's heroes, and who its villains? What roles do managers play, and umpires and announcers and mascots and the media? What is the game's future? These are the questions that John Feinsteinâ"best-selling author and sports journalist extraordinaireâ"examines in Play Ball: The Life and Troubled Times of Major League Baseball. As he did in his classic books on professional tennis and college basketball, Feinstein spent one entire season examining the game from the inside. He had access to general managers, who gave him never-before-revealed information on trades and the maneuverings behind these trades. He looks at managers Tony LaRussa and Jim Leyland to examine strategy and the psychology of success; he puts Tommy Lasorda under the microscope, showing the frustrating decline of a once-great franchise and the pain resulting from the tragic death of Lasorda's son. Feinstein answers questions about escalating salaries, reveals the identities of the real controlling forces in the game, explains why the owners so totally despised commissioner Fay Vincent, and graphically illustrates the financial state of the game as well as the pressures, the politics, and the joys that come with playing, managing, negotiating, and simply surviving a 162-game season. Above all are still the players, and this is what makes Feinstein's book so special. He gives us intimate portraits of such longtime superstars as Cal Ripken, Jr. and George Brett, as well as revealing glimpsesâ"some flattering, some not so flatteringâ"of such newer stars as Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonds, and Ken Griffey, Jr. Beyond the obsession with money and salaries, Feinstein knows it's the players who make and break the game. In Play Ball, we hear stories of how they were shaped; see how stardomâ"or lack of stardomâ"further shapes them; we finally unde. …

J. Harrison, Ray Bellino, Ray Scarborough, Rusty Gerhardt, Sandy Johnson (baseball), Sheldon 'Chief' Bender, Tommy Giordano. Excerpt: Paul Bernard Krichell (December 19, 1882 June 4, 1957) was a Major League Baseball catcher, best known for being the head scout for the New York Yankees for 37 years until his death. Krichell's talent evaluations and signings played a key role in building up the Yankees' run of success from the Murderers' Row teams of the 1920s to the 1950s teams led by Casey Stengel. Krichell began his professional career in the minor leagues, playing as the reserve catcher for the St. Louis Browns before a serious injury threatened his career. He continued to play in the minor leagues and began to move into coaching before Yankees manager Ed Barrow signed him as a scout in 1920. Considered one of the greatest scouts in baseball history, Krichell signed over 200 players who later played professional baseball, including future Baseball Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg, Phil Rizzuto, Whitey Ford, and Tony Lazzeri. His recommendation of Stengel as the Yankees manager was instrumental in Stengel's appointment in 1948. Barrow called Krichell 'the best judge of baseball players he ever saw'. Krichell was born in Paris, France, the son of a German cabinetmaker and youngest of nine children. He grew up in The Bronx, near Yankee Stadium. Krichell made his professional baseball debut in 1903 as a catcher with the Ossining, New York club in the Hudson River League's inaugural season. He moved to the Hartford Senators of the Connecticut League in 1906 and spent most of the following three years with the Newark Indians of the Eastern League. For the latter part of the 1909 season and the whole of 1910, Krichell played for the Montreal Royals at third base. In 1910, he played 102 games for the team, achieving a batting average of .249 and hitting 14 doubles. Krichell began his long association with manager Ed Barrow that year when the latter took charge of the Royals. In 1911, Krichell joined the St. Louis Browns as a reserve catcher, playing 28 games with a .232 batting average, 19 h 24 pp. Englisch. …

Ausschnitt aus Albumblatt, von Michael Dante mit blauem Stift signiert mit eigenhändigem Zusatz "Eileen: Best wishes" /// Autogramm Autograph signiert signed signee /// Michael Dante (born Ralph Vitti; September 2, 1931) is an American actor and former professional minor league baseball player. Dante was born Ralph Vitti in Stamford, Connecticut. Growing up, he would sneak into a local movie theater with his friends to watch westerns. "I grew up wanting to be the sidekick of The Lone Ranger and wanting to follow my heroes", Dante told a reporter in 2006. He was a shortstop on the Stamford High School baseball team, then played for "The Advocate All-Stars" team which won a 1949 New England baseball championship. After graduating from high school, Dante signed a bonus contract with the Boston Braves. He used his $6,000 bonus to buy his family a four-door Buick with whitewalls. Career During spring training with the former Washington Senators, Dante took drama classes at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Bandleader Tommy Dorsey arranged a screen test for him at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. His first film, Somebody Up There Likes Me, was released in 1956. He changed his name at the urging of studio boss Jack L. Warner, who thought "Vitti" would not fit well on theater marquees. Warner suggested some first names, from which the actor picked "Michael". He chose the last name "Dante" because it had been used by some relatives. Dante has appeared in 30 films and 150 television shows. He spent seven years in supporting roles under contract to three major studios at once: MGM, Warner Brothers and Twentieth Century Fox. He considers his best performances the role that he played in Killer Instinct on the CBS television series Desilu Playhouse, along with his roles in the movies Westbound (1959), Seven Thieves (1960) and Winterhawk (1975). His other film credits include Fort Dobbs (1958), Kid Galahad (1962), Operation Bikini (1963), The Naked Kiss (1964), Apache Rifles (1964), Harlow (1965), Arizona Raiders (1965), Willard (1971), That's the Way of the World (1975), The Farmer (1977), Missile X: The Neutron Bomb Incident (1978), Beyond Evil (1980), Return from the River Kwai (1989), and Cage (1989). Dante appeared on a few ABC/Warner Brothers series, including the westerns Colt .45 and Maverick. He appeared a couple times on the former, starring Wayde Preston. Dante and Forrest Lewis portrayed Davey Lewis and Willy Ford, respectively, in the 1957 episode "The $3,000 Bullet". Dante then played the role of Ab Saunders in the 1958 episode "The Deserters", with Angie Dickinson as Laura Meadows and Myron Healey as an unnamed fur trader, and directed by Leslie H. Martinson.[2] On Maverick he portrayed the killer Turk Mason in the 1957 episode "The Third Rider", with Jack Kelly. Another ABC-WB series he appeared on was the crime drama, Bourbon Street Beat, with Andrew Duggan, on the syndicated adventure series, Rescue 8, starring Jim Davis and Lang Jeffries, and in three episodes of CBS's The Texan, starring Rory Calhoun. Dante made two guest appearances on Perry Mason starring Raymond Burr. In 1959 he played Arthur Manning in "The Case of the Dangerous Dowager", and in 1965 he played murder victim Douglas Kelland in "The Case of the Feather Cloak." A frequent extra on the original Star Trek television series, he was cast in the role of "Maab" in the 1967 episode, "Friday's Child" alongside Julie Newmar. Dante has appeared at Star Trek conventions. In 1969, he played Clay Squires, a bitter young half-breed man, in the episode "Long Night at Fort Lonely" on the syndicated Death Valley Days, with Robert Taylor (actor) as Ben Cotterman and June Dayton as Cotterman's wife, Rachel[3] and in 1972 he played a harried TV commercial director in My Three Sons. In 1974 he played Julio Tucelli in The Six Million Dollar Man episode, Dr. Wells Is Missing. Dante also has recurring roles on the television serials Days of Our Lives and General Hospital. In the 1970s, Dante met John Wayne, whom he watched on screen as a child. Wayne had seen Dante in Winterhawk and asked him to co-host a charity event in Newport Beach, California. That started a friendship between the two actors, and they co-hosted other events until Wayne's death in 1979. Michael Dante is currently the host of a syndicated radio talk show, On Deck, previously known as the Michael Dante Celebrity Talk Show on which he interviews some of Hollywood's biggest stars. His program guests have included Milton Berle, Tony Curtis, Ron Ely, Bryant Gumbel, Stack Pierce, Connie Stevens and Stella Stevens. [4] An avid golfer, he once hosted the annual Michael Dante Celebrity Golf Tournament, a charitable fund-raiser held annually in Palm Springs, California, beginning in 1991. In 2006, Dante told an interviewer that he had written a script for a sequel to Winterhawk and was trying to get funding for the projected movie. Bisher shadowed the Petty racing family at their compound in Level Cross, North Carolina, and discovered the secret behind their success: family. He broke a story about brutality in college football, which led to a nation-wide scandal involving a shady conversation between Bryant and Georgia athletic director Wallace Butts about Georgia's game plan; read Bisher's explanation of this case of mistaken identity. In Face to Face, Bisher provides insight into the private lives of sporting men from all generations, sports, shapes, sizes and dispositions--golfer Arnold Palmer, Marlins manager Jack McKeon, boxer Muhammad Ali, UCLA coach John Wooden, media mogul Ted Turner, and more--open their hearts and their homes to legendary journalist Furman Bisher and to you. ; FINE/FINE. Signed, with sentiment, by the author on the front free endpaper; signature reads Enjoy the Book! Jeff Seidel. This book provides a look at what a number of former Orioles have done after their playing careers ended. The author spoke with a wide-ranging number of Orioles. from stars like Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson to those who had only 15 minutes of fame, like Dave Criscione and John Stefero. The author notes how many of the former Orioles stayed in baseball in some form, like Cal Ripken, who started his own minor league team in Aberdeen, Maryland, or former catcher Andy Etchebarren, a longtime empire's attendant. For many, their experience on the diamond became a launching point for their post-playing careers as coaches and managers; for others, their association with the Orioles simply blessed them as their careers took twists and turns away from the field of play. For all, the proud tradition of Orioles baseball has woven itself into the fabric of their everyday lives. The author interviewed 35 former Orioles players and one umpire attendant for this book. Jeff Seidel has been a journalist in the Baltimore/Washington area for over 20 years, covering high school, college, and professional sports. He has written for the Baltimore Sun, Washington Post, the Associated Press, NFLdotcom, Lacrosse Magazine, ESPN: The Magazine, Rink Side, Washington Jewish Week, and many other publications. He is the author of Baltimore Orioles: Where Have You Gone? Where Have You Gone? Baltimore Orioles is a look at what a number of former Orioles have done after their playing careers have ended. Author Jeff Seidel spoke with a wide-ranging number of Orioles from stars like Cal Ripken Jr. and Brooks Robinson to those who had only 15 minutes of fame like Dave Criscione and John Stefero. Also featured are Andy Etchebarren, Chris Hoiles, Mike Flanagan, the Cy Young award-winning lefty who anchored the Orioles pitching staff in the late 1970s and 1980s; Tommy Davis, the team's first designated hitter; Doug DeCinces, faced with the cruel task of taking over for Brooks Robinson at third base, and Brooks Robinson himself, still a fan favorite nearly 30 years after retiring. J. Harrison, Ray Bellino, Ray Scarborough, Rusty Gerhardt, Sandy Johnson (baseball), Sheldon 'Chief' Bender, Tommy Giordano. Excerpt: Paul Bernard Krichell (December 19, 1882 - June 4, 1957) was a Major League Baseball catcher, best known for being the head scout for the New York Yankees for 37 years until his death. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the mid-1940s, the post-war United States was a prosperous country, and baseball had its own share of this prosperity. An expanding minor league led to unprecedented competition for young baseball talent. The ill-conceived idea of a signing bonus quickly introduced an element of financial competition into the sport of baseball, much to the discomfort of many minor league teams. Unable to compete with major league teams, the minor leagues pressed for restrictions on the bonuses paid to players. Bonus rules--the first enacted in 1946 and the second implemented in 1953--attempted unsuccessfully to curb ever-rising bonuses and limit the damage this policy ultimately did to both teams and players. Containing 24 interviews, this volume focuses on players signed under the strict bonus rule of 1953-1957, which required that players signed to a bonus of $4,000 or more remain on the big league roster for two full seasons before being sent to the minor leagues. Organized chronologically, these interviews explore the lives and careers of the bonus babies with emphasis on their early big-league experience and its effect on their careers. Players interviewed in this volume include Harmon Killebrew, Reno Bertoia, Tommy Qualters, Jim Pyburn, John DeMerit, Von McDaniel, Don Pavletich, Mel Roach, Steve Boros, Dick Schofield, Jim Derrington, Mike McCormick, Jim Pagliaroni, Paul Giel, Buddy Pritchard, Jerry Walker, Jim Brady, Wayne Causey, Lindy McDaniel, Jim Small, Don Kaiser, Tommy Carroll, Jerry Kindall and Frank Zupo. An appendix provides a complete chronological listing of players signed under the bonus rule of 1953-1957. The work is also indexed. …

Thomas Edward John Jr. (born May 22, 1943) is a former left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball whose 288 career victories rank as the seventh highest total among left-handers in major league history and the most by any pitcher not selected for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. He is also known for the revolutionary surgery, now named after him, which was performed on a damaged ligament in his pitching arm. An outstanding basketball player at Gerstmeyer High School in Terre Haute, where he held the city single game scoring record, John was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians, making his major league debut in 1963. Of his 26-year major league career, he is best remembered for his seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1970s. He made appearances in the All-Star Game in 1968, 1978, 1979, and 1980. He played in all three Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series of his era (1977, 1978 and 1981), but was on the losing end of all three, having switched over to the Yankees by the time the Dodgers took the Series in 1981. John never played on a major league championship team.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. On offer is a fascinating journal of a young American woman, Ruth Harris Diuguid Dougherty Fallon (1917-2007). Born and raised in Sayville New York, Diuguid lived most of her life in or near Brooklyn. She married Frederick Howard Dougherty (1918-2004) in 1940 and subsequently Robert Edwards Fallon (1917-2012) in 1987. Ruth and Frederick had two daughters. Ruth was a housewife but on the side, she was a published journalist and photographer. She published articles in magazines such as Seventeen, but was best known for her historical newspaper articles in the Suffolk County News, where she wrote a column called Reflections of the Past about the history of Sayville, New York. Ruth also served on the world-wide governing council of the Girl Scouts and was an active member of the Sayville Historical Society. Ruth was 17 when she began this diary in 1935. She was a high school junior at Sayville High School. She crams every single page with detailed entries of the type of personal and social events that are of such crucial importance to a teenager. While the diary is set up to be kept over five years, Ruth writes voraciously and the vast majority of the entries are 1935-1937. On some pages, the entry for a single day will take up most of the page, with entries for other years jotted in the margins or skipped. The diary opens with a "Notice": "To whoever takes the liberty of reading this diary may it reflect upon their character and be a curse to them if they use the contents against me (or those mentioned) or to embarrass me (or those herein) " [Flyleaf]. And, with that dire warning, she launches in to a breathless description of her life with family and friends. The entries are very long so these are mostly just excerpts: "Went to school. I had little homework to finish. I am going with the gang to see Tommy Richards (who was stabbed) but some of them appeared []. Maybe I ought to introduce most of the gang they are the boys and girls of the neighbourhood .(she then goes on to list over a dozen friends including Freddie Dougherty whom she would later marry) " [Jan 3, 1935]. "Went to school for an hour in the morning to take English mid-term. I think I barely passed. Bee, Vi & I went to Metropolitan Theatre to see Folies Bergere. Had soda in Lofts. Vi & I went to store for mom.Vi, Helen, Connie, Flo, Margie and I walked to Bob s, sat on steps listening to his orchestra play awhile. Some young boys followed us. Met the boys from our gang on our block. Stood talking a while" [Apr 3, 1935]. "School. No assembly. Harold & I wandered around a while then went to baseball game. SHS vs Bayshore . We won 5-0. Water pistols were numerous in grandstand" [May 22, 1936]. "Wednesday work. A day I have long been awaiting arrived - I took my driving test for my senior license! Ma drove me down by 11: 00 to Patchogue(Granville Ave). The man was so nice. We carried on quite a conversation. He visited Daddy s business in Brooklyn years ago. I didn t do perfectly but I may have passed and I may not have. I do hope I did. I took mom to lunch in the Bonnie Mart. We looked in stores. (I had lunch). At home I cleaned my car (as I do once in a while). Thenwent to the beach. I later went to library. We felt the urge to study. I get biology and [? French]. Joe and John came down before we had towith work. At church meeting Howie said he had a compliment to tell me ++ nice to hear that the most enjoyable evening he ever spent was at Darcy s party. I can only say Ifind it enjoyable to when Howie is concerned" [August 19, 1936]. For a social historian, this is a terrific look into the lives led by American teenagers during the pre-war years. It would be an excellent source record for a Women s Studies program, particularly as it shows a lifestyle that was about to undergo a radical change with WWII and the post war years in America. For a genealogist, it offers and outstanding list of names and[request full listing from seller, Abe Word limit reached]. Signed by Author(s).…
