Two volumes, tall 8vo, additional engraved title in each volume, and pp. [iv], 570; [vi], 699; a fine copy in the original dull purple cloth, spines lettered in gilt (spines faded). Contemporary pencil and pen ownership inscription in each volume of J.M. Howard, 1835. A stereotype collected edition of Johnson's works, which first appeared in 1832 and was reissued several times. Another American edition had been published in 1825 (Philadelphia, Carey and Lea), but the preface to this edition states unequivocally that this is 'the only complete edition of Dr Johnson's works which has been published in this country', so presumably the Carey and Lea edition was less than perfect. This is a fine copy, in very good original state.
Condition: Fine in wrappers. First Edition. Octavo. Cover titles handwritten in marker; additionally, this copy with an original painting by Sophie von Hellerman on the cover. Collection of sketches by Sophie von Hellerman. Josh Smith designed and published the book.
