"The Judas Pair" -- written under the pen name of Jonathan Gash -- was a huge success, and the Lovejoy series was off and running (though the first dozen are the best.) The antique trivia and expertise are still here in this, Lovejoy's 10th outing (published in Britain as "The Tartan Rip"), as is the charming conceit that Lovejoy -- despite his unerring ability to recognize a valuable antique where others see nothing but dusty junk -- can never seem to keep so much as his electric bill paid, as he constantly fails in his efforts to be a better crook and less of a soft touch for the latest victimized widow. In this one, Lovejoy journeys to the Scottish Highlands, finds many antiques missing from Castle McGunn, and organizes an auction to rescue the family's fortunes. Needless to say, skullduggery ensues. Ian La Frenais & Co. turned the books into a moderately long-running BBC TV series (1990-1994) starring Ian McShane, Dudley Sutton, Chris Jury & Phyllis Logan. Though for some reason runner Tinker Dill (Dudley Sutton) was considerably scrubbed up, while Gash's hero -- who in the books is not terribly successful at beating off the ladies with a stick -- was rendered virtually celibate for the home screen, leaving Caroline Langrishe (among others) to go largely to waste. 185 pp., reduced from $16.

The antique trivia and expertise are still here, as is the charming conceit that Lovejoy -- despite his unerring ability to recognize a valuable antique where others see nothing but dusty junk -- can never seem to keep so much as his electric bill paid, as he constantly fails in his efforts to be a better crook and less of a soft touch for the latest victimized widow. We enjoyed this one better on the second reading, though the sturm und drang endings do grow increasingly far-fetched. (In "Gambado," Lovejoy is hired as an "antiques consultant" by a movie crew filming a -- supposedly fictional -- heist at the supposedly invulnerable British Museum. Needless to say, skullduggery ensues.) 275 pp. and 210. pp., respectively.
