Toole s entry in the Oxford DNB describes how Toole was desolate, and his health broke , after the Tooles twenty-two year-old daughter Florence died from typhoid fever on in November 1888, contracted a week before when visiting her parents who were performing at Cork. Her mother, Toole s wife Susan, died three and a half months later, in February 1889. Both letter and card are in good condition. They are enclosed in a grubby envelop, with stamp and postmarks, addressed to David Cunningham Esq / Belmont / Antrim / Ireland . Letter and envelope have thick mourning border. ONE: ALS. 1 March 1889. 1p, 12mo. Signed J. L. Toole . He thanks him for his kind and sympathetic letter - the loss of my dear Wife and Daughter has been a terrible blow to me , and he is going abroad for a few weeks. TWO: Lithographic portrait of Toole in character, on 7.5 x 11 cm card. Publishers slug at bottom left, in tiny capitals: "INK PHOTO." SPRAGUE & CO. LONDON. It depicts Toole dressed as a Victorian schoolmaster, with wing-collar shirt and mortar board, with right hand holding up pince-nez to his eyes. A manual of the Greek language in Swedish, written by Carl Jonas Love Almquist (1793-1866) as he was in the process of obtaining a priest's degree. Stockholm, tryckt hos Johan Hörberg, på W. Isbergs förlag, 1837. 8vo. [viii] + 252 pp. Inscribed to "Herr professor Butsch vördnadsfullt från Förf." Contemporary half leather, worn, spine missing. The recipient of the dedication, Johan Albert Butsch (1800-1875), was one of those who examined Almquist at the final exams. As an expert on the New Testament, Butsch would have had a special interest in the Greek language and is probably the one who has corrected a single letter in ink on p. 237 in this copy; Almqvist himself does not address the, 1875

Isbergs förlag, 1837. 8:o. [viii] + 252 sid. Carl Jonas Love Almqvist författade vid sidan om sina skönlitterära verk ett antal läroböcker för skolbruk, framförallt i språk. När denna lärobok i grekiska utkom var han i färd med att skaffa sig en prästexamen. Dedikationens mottagare Johan Albert Butsch (1800-1875) var en av dem som examinerade Almqvist vid slutproven. Han hade som kännare av Nya Testamentet säkert ett särskilt intresse för den grekiska språkläran. Det torde med andra ord vara han som rättat en enda bokstav i bläck på sid. 237 i detta exemplar; Almqvist själv tar inte upp felet i errataförteckningen. Butsch blev biskop i Skara samma år som boken utkom.

Illustrated with 112, various sized, in-text, black & white pen & ink drawings (lithographs); many are battle scenes, massacres, executions, etc. Printed on a high quality, mould-made, deckle-edged paper. Bound in full, fine-textured tan cloth with title & author's names gilt at top of spine. Front cover is a color reproduction of a Max Slevogt watercolor (shown here in the scan). Paper is deckle-edged, along fore-edge; gray headbands; top edge gilt Preserved in a tan cloth-covered slipcase, the interior of this is lined with a color-printed, oriental motif paper with black paper edging. Upper, back outer hinge at spine shows a 1/4" split to cloth, Front cover edge shows very small spot. Slight tanning to cloth on slipcase spine, with lighter tanning. As this copy has been in a slipcase, it is fairly well-preserved example of a rather fragile type of pictorial binding. Rare item. Fine, early German Artist's Book produced near the end on WWI, and illustrated by German Impressionist painter, Max Slevogt (1868-1932). The Conquest of Mexico by Cortez, translated by Mario Spiro.
