Oktober 1888 in New York City; 27. November 1953 in Boston) war ein US-amerikanischer Dramatiker und Literaturnobelpreisträger irischer Abstammung. Er ist zudem bis heute neben Robert Frost die einzige Person, der vier Pulitzer-Preise (1920, 1922, 1928, 1957) verliehen wurden der letzte postum. . Wiederbeginn als Dramatiker: Er las im Sanatorium wie besessen Werke von Ibsen, Strindberg, Nietzsche und Dostojewski und fühlte sich angetrieben Dramatiker zu werden. Er verspürte zum ersten Mal den Drang, Stücke zu schreiben und die bisherigen Erfahrungen zu verarbeiten. Nach seiner Entlassung im späten Frühjahr 1913 verbrachte er einige Zeit zuhause, und als die Spielzeit wieder begann, zog er zu einer befreundeten englischen Familie, von deren Haus man auf den Long-Island-Sund blickte. Hier blieb er über ein Jahr, las, ruhte, trieb Sport, härtete sich durch tägliches morgendliches Schwimmen im Sund ab, auch den ganzen Winter über, und schrieb vor allem. In etwa 15 Monaten verfasste er elf Einakter, zwei mehraktige Dramen und einige Gedichte. Für sein Drama Jenseits vom Horizont erhielt O'Neill 1920 den Pulitzer-Preis. Als erster amerikanischer Dramatiker wurde er 1936 für die Kraft, Ehrlichkeit und tiefempfundenen Gefühle in seinem dramatischen Werk, das eine eigenständige Idee der Tragödie verkörpert, mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet. Immer wieder widmete sich O'Neill in seinen Stücken den innerlich zerbrochenen Figuren, die durch Selbstbetrug und Rausch versuchen, der Verantwortung ihres Lebens zu entfliehen. Mit radikaler Ehrlichkeit legt er die Abgründe seiner Figuren offen, die aus verdrängter Schuld, falschen Gefühlen und Resignation bestehen und im sinnlosen Kampf miteinander verstrickt sind. O'Neills Bezüge zur griechischen Tragödie werden nicht zuletzt in der Trilogie Trauer muss Elektra tragen" (1931) deutlich, die seine tragische Antwort auf die Suche nach dem Lebenssinn darstellt.[1] Einen thematischen Mittelpunkt, dem O'Neills Schaffen nahezu durchweg zugeordnet werden kann, bildet in vielen seiner Werke die anklagende Auseinandersetzung mit der göttlichen Daseinsmacht, der Versuch, den Menschen durch sich selbst zu rechtfertigen, durch die innere Größe im Ertragen des Leidens, im Scheitern."[2] Am auffälligsten sind die bestehenden Verbindungen zwischen O'Neills eigenem Leben und seinem Werk in dem 1941 vollendeten Stück Eines langen Tages Reise in die Nacht", dessen Uraufführung O'Neill testamentarisch erst lange nach seinem Tod erlaubte. So schrieb er seiner Frau in der Widmung des Stücks: Ich schenke Dir das Originalmanuskript dieses Schauspiels, es handelt von altem Leid, geschrieben mit Tränen und Blut." In der Person Edmund, der nach Halt Suchende in einer unberechenbar und sinnlos gewordenen Welt, hatte er sich sein Spiegelbild geschaffen. Auch in seinem privaten Leben wiederholten sich belastende Familienumstände. Von seiner dritten Ehefrau wurde er 1946 wegen seelischer Grausamkeit" verklagt. Er verlor seinen Sohn durch Selbstmord. Seine Tochter Oona O'Neill, die später mit Charlie Chaplin verheiratet war, suchte vergeblich mit O'Neill in Kontakt zu kommen. Von der Parkinson-Krankheit und Neuritis gezeichnet, vernichtete er kurz vor seinem Tod einen beträchtlichen Umfang seines Werkes. In verschiedenen literaturwissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen wird auf die besondere Rolle O'Neills.

Hubert Fichte, der sowohl eine Ausbildung zum Schauspieler als auch eine Lehre in der Landwirtschaft (1955-1957) absolvierte und zeitweilig als Schafhirte in der Provence arbeitete, lebte ab 1961 in Hamburg, zunächst kurzzeitig in Lokstedt, dann an der Elbchaussee, schließlich - bis zu seinem Tod - in Othmarschen. . In früheren Ausgaben von konkret erschien regelmäßig Hubert Fichtes Plattenragout. In der Kolumne "Polizei - Dein Freund und Helfer" setzte sich Hubert Fichte 1966 in konkret (Nr. 8) kritisch mit der demokratischen Ordnung auseinander: "Soll der Gummiknüppel in unserer jungen Demokratie, auf der eine schlimme Hypothek lastet, Argumente, Humor, Verständigkeit von seiten der Polizei ersetzen?" Zu seinen prägenden Einflüssen gehörten neben Marcel Proust Hans Henny Jahnn, den Fichte 1949 kennenlernte, aber auch Jean Genet, mit dem er ein vielbeachtetes Interview führte. Sein Verhältnis zu Jahnn - und dessen Einfluss auf die Entdeckung der eigenen Homosexualität - hat Fichte in seinem letzten zu Lebzeiten erschienenen Roman Versuch über die Pubertät (1974) dargestellt, mit dem er seinen autobiografisch inspirierten roman-fleuve zu einem vorläufigen Abschluss brachte. Immer wieder bemühte er sich dort, die aus afrikanischen Kulten entstandenen synkretistischen Religionen kennenzulernen. Die später von ihm selbst als "Ethnopoesie" zusammengefassten Werke wie Xango (1976) und Petersilie (1980) verließen dabei die lyrische Perspektive nicht. Eher einer Ethnografie des Inlands verpflichtet sind seine St.-Pauli-Interviews, die zuerst 1972 unter dem Titel Interviews aus dem Palais d'Amour etc., dann 1978 erweitert unter dem Titel Wolli Indienfahrer erschienen sind, ebenso seine Interviews mit Hans Peter Reichelt (Hans Eppendorfer. Der Ledermann spricht mit Hubert Fichte, 1977). Parallel zu Fichtes ethnografischen Büchern erschienen die Fotobände Xango und Petersilie der Fotografin Leonore Mau, Fichtes Lebensgefährtin seit 1961. Die in den späten Siebzigern begonnene und auf 19 Bände angelegte Geschichte der Empfindlichkeit konnte Fichte nicht vollenden. Sie wurde ab 1987 aus dem Nachlass als Fragment veröffentlicht. Der letzte Band, Die zweite Schuld, wurde vom Autor mit einer Sperrfrist von 30 Jahren versehen, ist aber trotzdem bereits 2006 erschienen. Er erzählt von Fichtes Zeit im Literarischen Colloquium in Berlin 1963/64 und besteht im Wesentlichen aus Interviews (mit Joachim Neugröschel, Elfriede Gerstl, Walter Höllerer, Hermann Peter Piwitt und Klaus Stiller). Fichte starb 1986 kurz vor seinem 51. Geburtstag im Hafenkrankenhaus Hamburg an AIDS. Er wurde auf dem Nienstedtener Friedhof beigesetzt.
