  • Hardcover. Condition: Good. First of this edition. Scarce English dissenter's edition of the Holy Bible. Manchester: Russell & Allen, (1812)-1814. Folio, 11x17. In two parts: Genesis-Apocrypha (undated title page, some sources citing 1812), and the New Testament, with a separate title page dated 1814 (see below). The whole is unpaginated with printed binder's notations at bottom right corners, and book and chapter headings at the top. Originally bound as one volume. The whole is handsomely and professionally rebound in full black leather, circa mid 20th century, with a gilt decorated spine of the period and (faux) raised bands and new marbled endpapers. Professional repairs to frontispiece and title page. Full page engraved illustrations, 32 count (including frontispiece) with and engraved title page. The 18th century style engravings from various sources are distributed unevenly throughout the text, illustrating the more famous bible stories. Plates all have edge stain, some are evenly foxed; in two the stain affects the very edge of the engraving. Text is in very good condition, with occasional front edge stain. Though the margin is ample and even, it may have been cut down to eliminate most of the staining when rebound. It is possible that there is introductory or chapter information missing between the title page and first page of Genesis, but the binding is tight. This is a high quality professional restoration and rebinding. Explanatory notes and Reflections from the works of the commentators cites, footnoted at the bottom of each page. The title page for the second part, reveals the purposes and goals of this edition: "The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; Wherein The Sacred Text is at large recited, the sense explained, and the instructive example of the Blessed Jesus and his Holy Apostles, to our imitation recommended Illustrated with Valuable Notes and Annotations.the Objections of Deists and Infidels answered.an the whole of Divine Revelation.displayed in its original Purity.with Practical Reflections and Useful Admonitions at the end of each (bible) chapter from Poole, Henry, Doddridge, Brown, Coke etc. etc. The whole calculated to enlighten the Understanding, purify the Heart, and promote the Cause of Virtue and Piety, and thereby establish the Happiness and Peace of Christian Families in this World, and secure their eternal Salvation in the next". Doddridge (1702â_x0080__x0093_1751), like the other commentators whose comments illumine this 1814 bible, was a non-conformist English divine. A nonconformist was any English subject belonging to a non-Anglican church or, more broadly, any person who advocated religious liberty. The strict religious tests embodied in the laws of the Clarendon code and other penal laws excluded a substantial section of English society from public affairs and benefits, including certification of university degrees, for well more than a century and a half. Doddridge himself observed â_x0080__x0098_the number of dissenters is greatly increased.â_x0080__x0099_ He had an eye to the political importance of a united nonconformist body and made recommendations for a healing and unifying policy. Doddridge carried out his own ideal with great fidelity and with conspicuous success, doing more than any man in the 18th century to obliterate old party lines, and to unite nonconformists on a common religious ground (wiki). End resources include a "Chronological Index of the Years and Times From Adam Unto Christ", a "Geographical Index", a "Brief Chronological Catalogue of the Apostles and Their Successors.", a page with the names and titles ascribed to Jesus and the Church of God in scripture, "A Brief Table of the Interpretation of the Proper Names chiefly contained in the Old Testament", with a page of "testimonies in favor of the bible". Original front endpapers are missing. Original rear endpapers are present, with marked but stablized waterstain to lower extended corner. Ships from Dinkytown in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Due to the size/weight of this offer extra charges to apply for international shipping.

First editions of the work which introduced atomic theory into chemistry, published over 19 years and consequently very scarce complete in three volumes as here. "Dalton's chemical atomic theory was the first to give significance to the relative weight of the ultimate particles of all known compounds, and to provide a quantitative explanation of the phenomena of chemical reaction. Dalton believed that all matter was composed of indestructible and indivisible atoms of various weights, each weight corresponding to one of the chemical elements, and that these atoms remained unchanged during chemical processes. Dalton's work with relative atomic weights prompted him to construct the first periodic table of elements, to formulate laws concerning their combination and to provide schematic representations of various possible combinations of atoms. His equation of the concepts 'atom' and 'chemical element' was of fundamental importance, as it provided the chemist with a new and enormously fruitful model of reality" (Norman). Provenance: from the library of English physicist Edward Andrade (1887-1971), with his bookplate to front pastedown of vol. I. Andrade, with Ernest Rutherford, first determined the wavelenth of a type of gamma radiation, and published a number of books on the history of science. He built a substantial collection of scientific books, acquiring both issues of the first edition of Newton's Principia, Boyle's Sceptical Chymist and Gilbert's De Magnete. He sold the library in 1956 to fund his pension. The third volume of the set has the earlier bookplate of British chemist Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe (1833-1915), noted for his early work on vanadian and for photochemical studies. Dibner, Heralds, 44; Norman 575; PMM 261. Three volumes, octavo (first two volumes: 209 x 120 mm; third volume: 222 x 134 mm). First two volumes: contemporary half calf, twin black labels, marbled sides, second volume rebacked with original spine laid down, first volume with more minor repairs; third volume: contemporary cloth, plainly rebacked. The third volume with two separately printed papers on Microcosmic Salt and Analysing Sugar bound at rear. With 8 plates. Third volume unopened, with duplicate disposal plate dated 1871 of Owen College, Manchester and with their unobtrusive embossed stamp on some leaves; light wear to tips. Sporadic very minor foxing or soiling, contents generally clean, minor damping at head of some leaves in third volume. A very good set.

First edition, first issue. THE ATOMIC THEORY OF MATTER (PMM 261). First edition, untouched in uniform original publisher's bindings with original printed spine labels, of Dalton's classic work on the atomic theory of matter. "Dalton reconstructed Newton's speculations on the structure of matter, and, applying them in a new form to chemistry, gave Lavoisier's reformation of that science a deeper significance" (PMM). "Dalton's chemical atomic theory was the first to give significance to the relative weights of the ultimate particles of all known compounds, and to provide a quantitative explanation of the phenomena of chemical reaction. Dalton believed that all matter was composed of indestructible and indivisible atoms of various weights, each weight corresponding to one of the chemical elements, and that these atoms remained unchanged during chemical processes. Dalton's work with relative atomic weights prompted him to construct the first periodic table of the elements (in Vol. I, pt. 1), to formulate laws concerning their combination and to provide schematic representations of various possible combinations of atoms. His equation of the concepts "atom" and "chemical element" was of fundamental importance, as it provided the chemist with a new and enormously fruitful model of reality" (Norman). "He developed a system of chemical symbols and a table [plate 4 in part 1] showing the relative weights of the atoms of a list of elements. From his principles he deduced the law of definite proportions and the law of multiple proportions" (Dibner). This, and pp. 546-548 along with the 4 plates in part 2, in effect describe the first periodic table, which Mendeleev was to refine later. "In 1808 John Dalton published A New System of Chemical Philosophy, which described principles such as the uniqueness of atoms of the same element, relative atomic masses, and the rules of chemical combination, which taken together comprise the tablets of modern chemistry. The adoption of molecular formulas based on the laws of definite and multiple proportions, and the assignment of relative atomic masses, placed the science on a new quantitative footing" (Grossman, p. 339). This set is complete with the two parts of Vol. I and Vol. II, Part I (no further parts were published). Only one complete copy in uniform publisher's bindings has appeared since Norman, but that copy was made up with varying provenances, one part being ex-library. The Norman copy itself was in non-uniform bindings without the printed paper spine labels. Dalton (1766-1844) was born of a Quaker family at Eaglesfield, a small village in the English Lake District. As a young boy, he worked in the fields with his older brother, and helped his father in the shop where they wove cloth. In 1776, when only ten years old, he entered the service of Elihu Robinson, a wealthy Quaker, who taught him mathematics. In 1781, after a brief period of teaching in the village school, he joined his brother who was a master at a school in Kendal. In 1793 he moved to Manchester and, in the same year, published Meteorological Observations in which he suggested that the processes of evaporation and condensation were not chemical changes of state but rather changes in the physical form of water. These ideas laid the foundations for his theory that all matter is composed of discrete 'atoms'. At first after he moved to Manchester he taught mathematics and natural philosophy at New College, and began observing the behavior of gases, but after six years he resigned. Thereafter he devoted his life to research, which he financed by giving private tuition. By 1800, Dalton had become the secretary of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society (LPS), and in 1805 he presented a series of papers to the society outlining key points about the behaviour of gases in his series of essays, "Experimental Essays on the Constitution of Mixed Gases". He proposed that particles of an elastic fluid or gas were in fact elastic only with particles of their own kind. This extended Boyle's law to mixtures of gases. Dalton's further essay "On the Expansion of Gases by Heat" proposed the law that all elastic fluids expand the same quantity at the same heat. Jacques Charles (1746-1823) and Joseph Louis de Guy-Lussac (1778-1850) arrived at the same notion almost simultaneously. It is in this work that we see interest in the particles of matter themselves, rather than their behaviour, begin to emerge in Dalton's thinking. Atomism itself was not a particularly new idea in the early 19th century. The ancient Greek philosopher, Democritus (460-370 B.C.E.), proposed as part of a materialist philosophy that matter was made of tiny, indivisible pieces. Democritus suggested that there were certain basic elements that could be neither created nor destroyed, but that could be arranged into myriad forms. These atoms possess simple properties only, specifically size, shape, and mass. Anything else that we perceive, such as colour, is merely the result of interaction between the particles. In the 17th century, Isaac Newton hypothesized that matter was made up of atoms-small, hard homogeneous spheres adhering to one another through the gravitational force they exerted. The notion that matter was composed of atoms, and that there existed pure substances made of only one kind of atom (elements), was fairly common during the later Enlightenment period and into the 19th century. As a member of the Manchester LPS, Dalton was certainly familiar with these ideas. Dalton came to the notion of atomic structure only gradually, at first as a physical concept forced on him by his study of the atmosphere, heat, and gases. Dalton's notebooks and papers were destroyed during the bombing of Manchester during World War II, so historians of science perforce rely on earlier generations for their reporting of Dalton's day-to-day investigations. In his 1802-1804 notebooks, Dalton records on September 6, 1803, a table of the relative weights of the atoms of.

This set is complete with the two parts of Vol. I and Vol. II, Part I (no further parts were published). ABPC/RBH list only two other presentation copies of the first edition: Sotheby's, 20 March 2003, lot 76, a copy of Vol. I, Part I only; and Bonham's, 8 March 2016, lot 442, comprising Vol. I, Part II and Vol. II, Part I only. We are not aware of any other presentation copy of all three parts having appeared in commerce. Provenance: Dr. Cleghorn (presentation inscriptions in Vol. I, Parts I & II, 'Dr. Cleghorn with respects from the Author'); New College, Edinburgh ('Bibliotheca Coll. Nov. Edinensis' stamp on title-page); The Manchester publishers Bradshaw & Blacklock (Vol. II inscribed 'To Bradshaw & Blacklock presented by John Dalton D.C.L., F.R.S. &' on front free endpaper). 'Dr. Cleghorn' is probably Robert Cleghorn (c. 1755-1821). He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating MD in 1783, and was in general medical practice in Glasgow from 1785. He lectured at Glasgow University, from 1788 in medicine, and from 1791 in chemistry, and in 1818 he was awarded a professorship in chemistry and pharmacology at Glasgow, a role in which he continued until his death. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1790. He is the author of Dissertatio medica inauguralis, de somno (Edinburgh, 1783). By 1839, Bradshaw & Blacklock had moved premises to 27 Brown Street, from where they published their famous railway guides. Dalton and George Bradshaw attended the same Manchester Quaker's Meeting House. Dalton (1766-1844) was born of a Quaker family at Eaglesfield, a small village in the English Lake District.
