Add to basketRilegato. Condition: ottimo. prima edizione. The microanatomy of muscles. "A SIGNIFICANT, but largely disregarded, EARLY USE OF MICROSCOPIC STAIN was that by Muys." (Bracegirdle, History of Microtechnique, Cornell University Press, 1978, p. 11); "He discovered the strip nature of voluntary muscle, the sarcolemma, and the laminat…ed structure of the crystalline lens and made a careful study of the capillary anastomosis discovered by Malpighi and emphasized its importance" (Mettler 74). AN ELEGANT IMPRINT ON STRONG PAPER, LARGE PAPER COPY WITH BEAUTIFUL WIDE MARGINS; VERY CLEAN. MUYS, Wijer Willem. Investigatio fabricae, quae in partibus musculos componentibus extat. Dissertatio prima de carnis musculosae fibrarumque carnearum structura, quatenus sine vasis sanguiferis, nervis, nervosisque villis, atque membranis spectantur. Leiden [Lugduni Batavorum], Apud Joh. Arnold. Langerak, 1741 (but 1738, postdated in the course of printing by gluing a tiny slip of printed paper with "41" over the last two ciphers "38"). FIRST EDITION. Large 4to, [150], 431, [1] pages, 3 folded plates. Original date, 1738, printed on title page, covered with label. Author name precedes title on title page. Title in red and black, the beautiful printer's device is a large engraved copper vignette showing the Roman gods Mercury and Minerva with Latin motto "Dum audes ardua vinces" (if you will dare, you will overcome every difficulty). Contemporary stiff vellum with early ms. title to spine. A VERY FINE COPY, very rare. "What at first sight appears a very different aspect of the fine structure of the body did inspire, however, one remarkably protracted effort in microscopic research by a Dutch academic [i.e. Wijer Willem Muys]. [.] Also an admirer of injection, he stood out among his academic colleagues in anatomy for his outspoken enthusiasm for the microscope as well - "never praised enough nor exalted with words too splendid." By his own account, he was still a boy when he had first turned the microscope to the observation of muscle fibers, the focus of a research commitment that persisted throughout his career and culminated in 1738 [.] in the 430 pages of his Investigatio fabricae [.]. Ultimately, however, Muys's concluding tome also bore witness to the pervasive grip of the vascular physiology and hinted at how it could limit the prospects for microscopic discovery in still more subtle ways. [.] The microscope had contributed to another facet of the conceptualization of the muscle fiber, however, and it was this facet that was the central concern of Muys's Investigatio fabriace. [.] Foremost, then, among the ostensible discoveries Muys now offered after twenty years of observation was the conclusion that the succession of fibers consisted of eight successive levels or "orders" encompassed one within the other." (Edward Ruestow, The Microscope in the Dutch Republic. The Shaping of Discovery, Cambridge/New York, Cambridge University Press, 1996, pp. 100-101). "In 1741 the Leyden anatomist Wyer Guglielm Muys (1682-1744), who crowned his career with a book on the microanatomy of muscles, presented the magnifications he used with a system that omitted the cubic rhetoric of computation and embodied quantification in a more concrete pattern. For each magnification Muys provided and indeed wrote, "quam 1 ad x", x being a variable between 10 and 400.929 This method was the precise quantified transposition of the procedure of magnification used for drawing, where the natural size (equivalent to 1) was coupled with the magnified figure (of which x represents the magnification). At the same time, the British fellows of the Royal Society (Miles, Needham, Parsons, Arderon, Badcock) had followed Baker's impulse and began to report, not the magnifying power in term of diameter, but the number of the powers used, (or their qualitative power) so as to enable others to repeat the observations." (RATCLIFF, Marc. Europe and the Microscope in the Enlightenment. PhD Dissertation, UCL, January 2001).
