Book First Edition
Cloth, 8vo, xviii, 238 pp. A biography of the literary agent, publisher and author Michael Joseph, written by his son, "Some of the many famous authors that MJ befriended and encouraged are Michael Arlen, Stacy Aumonier, H. E. Bates, Monica Dickens, Paul Gallico, Daphne du Maurier, C. S. Forester and Richard Llewelyn. Later authors include Miss Read (Dora Saint), Dick Francis (who rode for him) and the late Duchess of Windsor, whose biography title he acquired, against stiff opposition, as a result of his earlier meetings with Edward VIII. The list is endless with the result that today many authors owe their fame to his efforts. MJ was also a prolific writer and journalist with some 17 books to his name, some of which became bestsellers in their own right. His famous cat books were tremendously popular - particularly Charles- The Story of Friendship, and Best Cat Stories." - from the blurb. Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.

(Hardcover, 1986 ). (1900) 1986 facsimile edition. Large 8vo (174 x 252mm). Ppxxviii,590. Portrait photographs, illustrations, preface by Chris Cradock. Green cloth, gilt titles and gun motif to upper board, spine titled in gilt. Top edge dusty, minor faults but a good copy. Teasdale-Buckell was editor of "Land and Water" for the last fifteen years of the nineteenth century. After much discussion of style, stance, guns and patterns, he devotes a chapter each to all of the famous gunmakers of the period. An important and fascinating book from the early days of breech-loaders and smokeless powder. This facsimile edition does not have the page showing updates to the Record Game Register followed by several pages of adverts that are found in some issues of the first edition. .

Book
(Hardcover, 1986 ). (1846) 1986 facsimile of the 1893 edition. Large 8vo (160 x 240mm). Ppxxxvi,319. Illustrated with b&w plates & vignettes by Harrison Weir, Charles Whymper & others. Purple cloth, titled & decorated in gilt on spine & upper board. Minor faults, slight use and browning, good-plus. This is Charles St. John's famous description of the Highlands in the early years of the nineteenth century. "What at present renders (this book) especially valuable is that Scotland and the Scotch fauna have considerably changed during the last half-century. The variety and abundance of wild life here described can never again be seen. Fortunately a true picture of that departed past is preserved in St. John's vivid narratives. .Thus many animals and birds which were sufficiently common in St. John's time are now rare and seldom seen. It has been thought advisable, therefore, in this edition to add a few notes in order to illustrate the instincts or traits of these creatures, their prevalence or scarcity. Some more general remarks have also been appended here and there to clear up any obscurity or bring out associations which might otherwise have been forgotten. .The additional notes of the author, marked C. St. J., are printed word for word from an interleaved copy of Jermyn's manual of British Vertebrate animals. They are interesting as showing the exactitude and brevity of St. John's notes. At times they also throw further light upon the text." Chapters include: Highland lakes, small lochs ravens, wildcats, char, night fishing, trolling large trout on Loch Ness, flies, fishing with the otter (board); Roe; Grouse, partridge, marten cat, stags snaring grouse; The wild cat; Poaching in the Highlands; Salmon fishing, flies, fly making; Owls of various species, shrike, reptiles; Peculiarites and instincts of different animals; Eagles and falcons; Hen harriers, kestrels, merlins, hobbies; Otters (the mammal, this time); Weasels, ferrets, martens, stoats; Anecdotes and instincts of dogs, retrievers, shepherds' dogs; Wood pigeons, their increase, other species of pigeon; Wild ducks; Birds that come in spring, pewits, ring dotterels, redshanks, oyster catchers, curlews, redstarts, swallows, etc; Sheldrakes, teals, landrails, cuckoos, nightjars, quails, grebes, coots, water hens, water rails; Wild geese, different kinds of wild geese, black headed gulls, birds that breed on the river banks; The sandhills of Morayshire, foxes, roe deer; Death of my first stag; The Findhorn River; Migration of birds in October, swan shooting; Water ouzels, kingfishers, terns; The Muckle Hart of Benmore; Different kinds of gulls, the boatswain gull; Woodcock, snipe, jack snipe; Seals, anecdotes, seal shooting, catching seals; Fox hunting in the Highlands; The badger; Autumn day on the mountain, stags and hinds, death of the stag; Peculiarities and instincts of different animals, knowledge of change of weather; Coursing deer; Tameness of birds when sitting; Variety of game. .

(Hardcover, 1986). (1814) 1986 reprint of 7th edition. 8vo (145 x 225mm). Ppxxiv,507. B/w plates and illustrations. Grey cloth, spine & upper board titled & decorated in gilt. Slight use but very good. Reprinted from the 7th edition (1833). "The original edition, which led to the publication of the following pages, was hastily written, at the particular request of some sporting friends of the Author, who had recourse to the press, in order to present each of them with a legible copy. A few supplementary impressions also were provided, for the amusement and instruction of the inexperienced sportsman, to whom, alone, he still presumes to offer so humble a production. To prevent enlarging this work to an expensive publication, all needless embellishments have been studiously avoided." That said, this book is comprehensive, very detailed, and quite long, and principally about wildfowling. A classic of its kind with much on dogs, guns, punt guns, and shooting from boats and various other vehicles. .

This is a combined volume consisting of two separate books: Coursing, by Harding Cox, and, Falconry, by the Hon. Gerald Lascelles.
