Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition of this late collection of essays by celebrated Chicago bookman, mystery writer, bibliophile, and Sherlock Holmes scholar Vincent Starrett (1886-1974), privately published by Autolycus Press in an edition limited to 500 copies. Late, Later and Possibly Last was the final book published during Starrett's lifetime, appearing only a year before his death. The collection includes essays reflecting Starrett's lifelong interests in books, literature, Sherlock Holmes, and the world of the dedicated book collector. With an introduction by Michael Murphy, Starrett's friend, literary associate, and later member of the Baker Street Irregulars. Illustrated with a full-page portrait of Starrett by William Eubank. The publisher's distinctive black binding is decorated and lettered in gilt, including a large gilt design on the front board reading "From the Library of Vincent Starrett." This is part of the original publisher's binding design and is not presented as evidence that this individual copy came from Starrett's personal library. Condition Very Good hardcover, issued without dust jacket. Black leatherette boards show moderate rubbing and light surface scuffing, with some wear along the edges and extremities. Gilt decoration and lettering remain bright and attractive. Slight wear is visible at the spine ends and corners. Interior appears clean and well preserved in the pages examined. Binding remains sound. Printed on substantial paper with deckled fore-edges. Please see photographs for full condition details. Significance / Collector Appeal Vincent Starrett occupies a particularly interesting place in American book collecting and Sherlockiana. His The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes helped establish the tradition of treating Holmes and Watson as historical figures for purposes of playful scholarly investigation, and Starrett became one of the central figures associated with the Baker Street Irregulars. Published in 1973, Late, Later and Possibly Last was Starrett's final book issued during his lifetime and serves as a fitting late-career gathering of writings by one of America's great twentieth-century bookmen. A particularly appealing title for collectors of Sherlock Holmes, Baker Street Irregulars material, bibliophilic literature, private press books, and Chicago literary history. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed for shipment. Domestic shipping via USPS Media Mail unless otherwise requested. Expedited and international shipping available where permitted. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3b.
