Original brochure. Condition: Gut. 56 p., 56 full page fig., black and white. Cover rubbed, otherwise clean. - From the text: Few people recognise the difficulties of planning an illustrated catalogue. Large pictures have to be reduced a lot, very small pictures not very much. Therefore, to prevent losing all sense of scale, the dimensions of the original, height stated first, are given in the index. The tale of how M. Desenfans was commissioned to buy pictures to form a national gallery in Poland and how King Stanislaus had to abdicate before he had paid for them has been told so often as to be no longer worth repeating. Desenfans of necessity had to sell some of the pictures destined for the Polish National Gallery, but he bought others and though it is a pity he had to sell any at all, yet we cannot but be grateful to him, his wife and Sir Francis Bourgeois K.A. for having left these beautiful things to the Dulwich Gallery.
