Im Anschluss studierte er Geschichte, Soziologie und Kunstgeschichte an der Universität München; 1984 schloss er diese Studien mit seiner Promotion ab. Legler gilt als Experte für mittelalterliche Klosterbaukunst, insbesondere zum Thema Kreuzgang.
