Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, seit fast sechzig Jahren Berliner Bürger, hat stets besonderen Anteil an der kulturpolitischen Situation dieser Stadt genommen. In einem Brief vom 12. Juli 1964 schrieb er mir u.a.: Gestatten Sie mir. Ihnen einige Gedanken mitzuteiler, die sich im Zusammenhang mit der Ausstellung in der Akademie meiner Frau und mir aufgedrängt haben und die auch von anderer Seite geäußert worden sind: daß möglichst viele der Bilder. die da zusammengebracht worden sind. zusammenbleiben sollten. Meine Frau und ich sind daher übereingekommen, meinen künstlerischen Nachlaß nach unserem Tode der Stadt Berlin zu schenken. Zugleich schlug Karl Schmidt-Rottluff den Bau eines schlichten Museums am Rande der Großstadt vor, das nicht nur seinen eigenen Schöpfungen zur Aufnahme dienen, sondern ebenso für die Darstellung und Erforschung des Werkes aller Brücke -Meister genutzt werden könnte, und begründete diesen Gedanken mit den Worten: Dieser Vorschlag hätte auch die Historie für sich: alle Maler der Brücke haben einmal in Berlin gelebt und gearbeitet und haben von Berlin aus gewirkt. Erich Heckel und Frau Marta Pechstein stimmten sogleich der Verwirklichung dieses Planes zu. Am 1. Dezember 1964, dem achtzigsten Geburtstage des Künstlers, faßte der Senat den Beschluß. ein Brücke -Museum zu erbauen. In Übereinstimmung mit Karl Schmidt-Rottluff wurde der jetzige Standort festgelegt. Die Aufgabe, den neuen Museumsbau zu errichten, wurde Werner Dütimann übertragen. Kari Schmidt-Rottluff hat bis zur endgültigen Konzeption des Baues mitgearbeitet. Das Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus nahm in seiner 44. Sitzung am 18. Dezember 1964 dankbar Kenntnis von der Stiftung Karl Schmidt-Rottluffs, die in der Aussprache als beispielhaft. von einem unschätzbaren Wert für die Stadt, und als ein Vertrauensbeweis für Berlin bezeichnet wurde. Die Bauarbeiten am Museum gingen zügig voran, und die einzelnen Bauabschnitte konnten termingerecht eingehalten werden, da alle an der Durchführung des Planes Beteiligten einschließlich der Bauhandwerker ihr Bestes gaben, um dem Geiste dieser Stiftung zu entsprechen. Das Brücke -Museum verfügt, dank der zahlreichen Spenden, bereits heute über einen bedeutenden Fundus an Gemälden, Aquarellen, Skulpturen und Graphiken, und vieles wird in den kommenden Jahrzehnten noch zu tun bleiben, um die Bestände zu erweitern und zu ergänzen. An dieser Steile möchte ich noch einmal allen denen danken, die an der Entstehung dieses Museums und Archivs mitgewirkt haben, in erster Linie Herrn Karl Schmidt-Rottluff und Herrn Erich Heckel, die den entscheidenden Anstoß gaben. Ein besonderer Dank gebührt auch Herrn Prof. Dr. Reidemeister, der diesen Plan durch Rat und Tat sehr förderte. Damit bleibt das Gründungsmitglied Fritz Bleyl, dessen Schaffen dieser Jahre nur Aquarelle und Graphik umfaßt, unberücksichtigt. Von den in den Folgejahren zur Brücke hinzugekommenen neuen Mitgliedern, sind nur Nolde - für die kurze Zeit seiner Mitgliedschaft 1906/07 - und Pechstein vertreten, da es mit diesen zu einer zeitweiligen bzw. jahrelangen echten Zusammenarbei gekommen ist. Die auswärtigen Mitglieder bleiben außerhalb der Betrachtung, obwohl die von den Brücke-Malern an ihr Schweizer Mitglied Cuno Amiet gerichteten Briefe, die uns Frau Lydia Thalmann-Amiet und Frau Siddi Hecke! freundlicherweise zugänglich machten, manche Aufhellung für diese Jahre beinhalten. Die Ausstellung bemüht sich um Klärung der künstlerischer Entwicklung dieser ersten sechs entscheidenden Jahre der "Brücke", und dies bestimmt die Auswahl der Bilder.
