Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 71 pp., illustrations, bibliography. At the end of the eighteenth century the Frenchman Bruny d'Entrecasteaux sailed the western part of the Pacific Ocean. O the return voyage, this famous expedition visited the intermediate port-of-call on Java making use of the harbour facilities of the Dutch East Indies. The senior Dutch VOC official, S. C. Nederburgh, temporarily stationed on Java at the time, was able to acquire a number of the objects collected uring the expedition, and that is why part of the Bruy d'Entrecasteaux collection ended up in a Dutch museum. The objects, eleven clubs, a spear and a food pounder deserve more attention than they have received until now. They were acquired by the French expedition on several Melanesian and Polynesian islands in 1792 and 1793, some thirteen years after the English explorer James Cook's third and final voyage. They therefore number among the oldest Oceanic collections found in ethnographic museums in the West. The authors have been able to trace, in great detail, the history of acquisition of these, and related, important and interesting objects now stored in Dutch and French ethnographic institutions. Van Duuren and Mostert have been able to trace, in great detail, the history of acquisition of these -- and related -- important and interesting objects now stored in Dutch and French ethnographic institutions. Such serendipity is extremely rare for museum objects acquired more than two hundred years ago.

Much of their art depicts the journey of the soul of the deceased through a richly variegated spirit world. The present publication offers a comparative analysis of various Ot Danum ritual objects. It draws on a long tradition of ethnographic writing on the area stretching back to the mid-19th century, mainly by German and Swiss Protestant missionaries and Dutch colonials. Raymond Corbey is an anthropologist attached to Leiden University, the Netherlands. His research includes the history of dealings with non-Western ritual art by, among others, missionaries, art dealers and museums.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Karel Sirag (illustrator). 222 pp., illustrations, diagrams, bibliography, glossary. This book is about the iron ancestors, these remarkable objects, amulets rather than weapons, material witnesses of an ancestor cult that permeates many phases of Indonesian culture from the earliest times to the present. The main group and the relatively best-known embodies the all-iron kris with a stylized human being as its hilt. But this book includes other objects, even less known, most of which have found only scant mention in difficult to obtain specialized publications or have been ignored all together. What they have in common is that they are all-iron with an ancestor hilt. That is why the author calls them iron ancestors.

Regarded as inferior in Western eyes, in sub-Saharan Africa copper proved to be a much coveted material which was applied in bodily adornments, in statuettes and as a means of exchange. Brass became a highly valued metal almost rivalling gold in lustre as well as glitter: a typical West African and Central African phenomenon. Among certain African ethnic groups, adornments served not only to distinguish oneself, they could also be regarded the most personal mementoes of the wearer after his or her demise, and were placed as an aide-memoire on the family altar in order to present oblations to on appropriate occasions. From the many hundreds of items included in the collection acquired by Harry and Miep Schillings, this book introduces some hundred items chosen on the basis of their shape, rarity and decorative motifs.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 163 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), color maps, portraits ; 29 cm. Summary:During the past 100 years the traditional ritual art related to ancestor cults, spirit beliefs and headhunting has withered in the sparsely populated Raja Ampat archipelago. Setting out to establish an inventory of the 'mon' spirit figures, 'korwars' and secret priests' drawings, this book delves into the exploits of naturalists, explorers, colonial administrators and, in particular, missionaries since the beginning of the 19th century. The social and cosmological background of the spirit and ancestor figurines from the archipelago is discussed extensively, with a wealth of fascinating details and new insights. In the process it is shown how the demise and the exodus of the traditional art resulted from complex interactions between indigenous agency, conversion, cargo cult activity, modernization and, last but not least, interventions by administrators. The abundantly illustrated book includes a number of stunning, sacred-secret drawings depicting the spirit world, devised by indigenous priests to serve them in their rituals. Acquired during the 1930s, these drawings were long believed to be lost but have recently been rediscovered. Raymond Corbey is an anthropologist attached to Leiden University, the Netherlands. He also published - 'Headhunters from the Swamps: The Marind Anim of New Guinea as seen by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, 1905-1925' (2010), and - 'Of Jars and Gongs: Two keys to Ot Danum Dayak Cosmology' (2016).

Protestant missionaries have provided the earliest and most detailed sources regarding the ritual art of the Papuan peoples of the Geelvink Bay. While converting these missionaries collected, but they were also involved in the destruction of countless items. 'Korwar. Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 496 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. Ancient Indonesian Gold is the first publication of the Documentation Centre for Ancient Indonesian Art in Amsterdam. It examines Indonesian gold, sculptures, objects and jewellery, affording fresh insights into the history, techniques and use of the special types of jewellery made by Javanese goldsmiths. The objects have been studied closely and their descriptions sometimes differ from that in earlier publications. This was done in an attempt to give the reader new information about ancient Javanese gold. Most of the 115 selected items are published here for the first time and provide a good introduction to the fascinating goldsmith art of Central- and East Java from circa 750 to 1550. Several objects exhibit the foreign influences that helped shape Javanese art, as illustrated by early photographs. This begins with the impact of Hinduism from India, somewhat later that of Buddhism, and subsequently of Islamic culture. The illustrations in this publication include high-quality photographs of the works of art as well as old photographs and details of archaeological sites throughout Java. In this way, art lovers are able to better understand Indonesian culture as well as the virtuosity of Javanese goldsmiths. Indonesia's rise to greatness was due to its ability to time and again absorb new elements from foreign cultures and incorporate them into its own intrinsic civilisation.
