Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 418 pages, a very good plus (near fine) hardback in a very good dust-jacket [0714501123]. This is one of those RARE books with a copyright date of 1966 yet still with an SBN number (9 digits). Here is the ISBN History, In 1965, W. H. Smith (the largest single book retailer in Great Britain) announced its plans to move to a computerized warehouse in 1967 and wanted a standard numbering system for books it carried. They hired consultants to work on behalf of their interest, the British Publishers Association's Distribution and Methods Committee and other experts in the U.K. book trade. They devised the Standard Book Numbering (SBN) system in 1966 and it was implemented in 1967.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover with dust jacket now protected in removable cover. Aidan Higgins (born 3 March 1927) is an Irish writer. His upbringing in a landed Catholic family in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, provided material for his first experimental novel, Langrishe, Go Down (1966). The book was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction and was later adapted as a BBC television film by British playwright Harold Pinter, in association with RTÉ. Balcony of Europe tells the story of a young Jewish wife from San Francisco and a middle-aged Irish painter who meet in a village on the coast of Spain, beginning an affair during the coldest European winter in two hundred years--all the while surrounded by a cast of characters as bizarre and hilarious as they are, finally, touching. Lyrical and humorous, heartbreaking and hopeful, Balcony of Europe is Aidan Higgins crowning achievement.
