Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Christina Rossetti was in a sense the first poet of the Pre-Raphelites, her "Goblin Market and Other Poems" (1862) having been - as if by accident - the writing from that group which first caught public attention. It contains many of her best poems. Later work - devotional poems, love lyrics and descriptive pieces - extended the themes and forms of her first remarkable collection. It is remarkable, but in a quiet and intense way, not in the manner of those who seem to have learned from her among her contemporaries. Ford Madox Ford, who had a subtle ear for the unemphatic excellence of the 19th-century writers, called her "the most valuable poet that the Victorian age produced". Her modern admirers are many, especially among the poets. Philip Larkin speaks of her poetry as "unequalled for its objective expression of happiness denied and a certain unfamiliar steely stoicism". In this selection C.H. Sisson presents a wide range of her work and in his biographical and critical introduction suggests fresh perspectives on it. Sisson also includes here Rossetti's long-unavailable "Maude, A Story for Girls", which was written when she was very young and gives some indication of her cast of mind and her skills as a writer of prose fiction. The character of Maude is a severe self-portrait, wry at her own expense. As Sisson says, "with any poet the starting point, social as well as literary, is worth finding out about". The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Although The Brontes have long fascinated readers of fiction and biography, their poetry was all too little known until this pioneering selection by Stevie Davies, the novelist and critic. Charlotte (1816-1855) is certainly a competent poet, and Anne (1820-1849) developed a distinctive voice, while Emily (1818-1848) is one of great women poets in English. All three sisters, as Stevie Davies remarks in her introduction, were Romantic in inspiration, writing poetry of passionate personal feeling and of pure imagination. they share certain themes - liberty, loneliness, love - and harbour the myth of a lost paradise. Read together with their novels, the poems movingly elucidate the ideas around which the narratives revolve. And they surprise us out of our conventional notions of the sisters' personalities: Emily's rebelliousness, for example, is counterbalanced here by great tenderness. This selection gives an idea of the variety of thought and feeling within each authors's work, and of the way in which the poems of these three remarkable writers parallel and reflect each other. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. A Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year 2020. A Telegraph Book of the Year 2020. In Squid Squad: A Novel we join Natalie Chatterley, Angus Mingus, Nerys Harris and friends as they make recordings of the doorbell, uncrumple their cash and fling their walnuts from the window. They contemplate the spaces between the spaces between things and compare the rhythm of rhetoric to the rhetoric of rhythm, while around them chickens feed on chestnuts, nuthatches nest in bicycle baskets, and budgerigars sulk themselves to sleep. The second half features shorter stand-alone poems. Here, poetic form is given a playful reworking: a poem to be spoken in a single breath, a poem made entirely of questions, a series of three poems in the form of university mark schemes, and poems that explore the possibilities of the list as a verse form. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. The Ark is Peter Scupham's latest collection of poems, following his Selected Poems and Watching the Perseids , both published by OUP in 1990. The poems explore questions hovering on the borderlines of `is' and `seems', life and death, truth and lies. His Ark is steered to `its safe and certain loss' with a freight of dreams, memories, terrors, gifts; it is a habitation that carries him through varied landscapes and weathers to a possible Ararat. Three very different sequences hold the collection together: an experimental sequence, `Accident', followed by `Annunciations', and `A Habitat', a group of poems loosely surrounding the retrieval of an old house from its ghostly past. This book is intended for readers of comtemporary poetry. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Inspired by Shakespeare's songs, the short poems of Emily Dickinson, and Wordsworth's "Lucy" poems, this collection of songlike poetry is based on the ubiquitous spread of weeds - like the shallow rooting plants, small poems can grow anywhere. In her seventh collection, Khalvati demonstrates a dazzling mastery of traditional forms and experiments with the Ghazal, an ancient Persian form comprised of an unrhymed couplet. Evoking three generations and geographies of women, "The Meanest Flower" reinstates the joyful, audible aspect of the lyric. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. William Hazlitt (1778-1830), that most engaging of English essayists, is provocatively and congenially at home in this new collection of his city essays that spark with urbane wit and gossip. Characters from his world come alive: Wordsworth and Beau Brummell, street jugglers and coffee house politicians, the ladies' maid returning from Italy 'as giddy as if she had been up in a balloon' and the literary footmen who 'wear green spectacles' and 'are seen reading books they do not understand at the Museum and public libraries'.Gregory Dart's selection reminds us that Hazlitt is not only an important critic and polemicist, but also a reflective, wry, wise and humorous writer, a man who relished London life. Many of the essays included here are made available for the first time in paperback. A detailed introduction and notes set them in their context and clarify contemporary references. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"Selected Poems", originally in Carcanet's "Signatures" series, has proven to be one of the most popular volumes of modern Welsh poetry, having gone through six printings in ten years. Gillian Clarke combines traditional skills with a highly individual voice. Hers is a unique perspective on Welsh history and on the role of women within a rich, and at times volatile, culture. "Her language has a quality both casual and intense, mundane and visionary", the "Listener" said of "Letter From a Far Country" (Carcanet 1982). "There is no gaudiness in her poetry; instead, the reader is aware of a generosity of spirit which allows the poems' subjects their own unbullied reality". The title poem of this volume describes the vineyards of an area of Italy which has been the subject of many of Tomlinson's poems since his earliest work. In the Cinque Terre, vines are cultivated along the cliffs, within precarious sight of the sea beneath. These are the poems of a traveller, exploring the personal through the sense of place - Italy, Greece, Spain, Portugal and the West of England. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Come from outer space, it travels - on a fox's paw, the beak of a kite and a crow and a buzzard - into the very heart of our lives. The poet includes personal, verses and stories from farmers in her family and neighbourhood. The open structure allows the Gillian Clarke to include her seven rock poems, written for the National Botanic Garden of Wales; her poems based in archaeology; and her poems about war, and urban violence. There is an instinctive and a deliberate unity of theme and idiom in this book. The poet remains true to her landscapes and her nation. The sequence 'The Physicians of Myddfai', nine sonnets for Aberglasne, and much else is included in this characteristically generous and engaging volume by Wales' best-loved poet. Poems experiment with forms and histories, grieving for estrangement and heartbreak, haunted by climate anxiety. It represents the poet's own distillation of the first two decades of her writing - the poems which established her as one of the most passionate and precise of our writers, a woman of human values, religious vision and natural sympathy. 'The outstanding thing about Jennings' poetry' wrote Douglas Dunn, 'is its wisdom, hard earned from grief and religious faith'. And Peter Levi says, 'She is one of the few living poets we could not do without'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. 'Ach! I misspoke. What I mean to say is this .' In Long Pass, Joey Connolly's first collection, the poet - in love, in puzzlement, in frustration or in elegy - keeps catching himself out, starting again. He wants to speak truthfully. He wants to say things simply. But nothing is as simple as it seems at first. Nothing strikes the interlocutor quite as he intends. Ach! He goes back. Deflections, tangents: the long pass, the long unfolding sentence, the growing sequence, move away from what they intend to say in order at last, wittily, angrily, ironically, to swerve in and say it.Translation, too, is hard. There are often competing versions - of Lorca, for example, and Cavafy. ' The painter is frustrated to be always / painting onto something, to be / concealing precisely as he displays.' Words reveal and at the same time conceal, yet what they conceal is part of what they want to say.The poet throws the poem for someone who isn't always there to catch. The fortunate reader intercepts. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
