Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good (see description). Clemente F Guzman iii Cover Art (illustrator). First Edition. ----------softcover, a Very Good/Very Good+ example, a bit of light rubbing, crease on rear panel, 441 pages, photos, some contents are in Spanish but most is in English, ---"From the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas to East L.A. to the barrios of Chicago, people are listening to the heartfelt, accordion-driven sounds of conjunto. Born in South Texas in the 1920s, conjunto has become popular throughout the United States, Mexico, and, of late, Europe and Japan. But Texas remains the heart of conjunto music making. Indeed, the largest conjunto festival in the world is the Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio, founded in 1982. ¡Puro Conjunto! is a wide-ranging collection of writings taken from the festival s program magazine, Tonantzin. These writings include scholarly essays, articles by journalists and music critics, interviews with legendary performers, autobiographical accounts, short stories, and poetry. Their subjects include the history of conjunto music, its signature instruments, the social context and functions of conjunto, and personal histories of conjunto music giants. Most of these pieces have never been published elsewhere. Photos and full-color reproductions of the festival posters accompany the text. This collection should interest conjunto and folk-music fans, as well as students and scholars"---, ----CONTENTS are: Part One: Conjunto: A Primer -The Unofficial Conjunto Primer for the Uninitiated Music Lover (Carlos Guerra) /Part Two: Raíz y Tradición: Conjunto-Music History -The Emergence of Conjunto Music, 1935-1955 (Manuel Peña); From Ranchero to Jaitón: Ethnicity and Class in Texas-Mexican Music (Manuel Peña); Conjunto Music: The First Fifty Years (Manuel Peña); The Accordion on Both Sides of the Border (Carlos Jesús Gómez Flores); Three of the Greatest Bajo Sexto Players in the History of Conjunto (Ramón Hernández, Jr. ); Women in Conjunto Music (Ramiro Burr); El Conjunto Bernal: Style and Legacy (Max Martínez); The Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio: Eight Years of Change (Carmen Luévanos)---Part Three: Instrumentos: Accordion, Bajo Sexto, Saxophone- Accordion Menace . . . Book
Cloth, large 8vo, xix, 236 pp. Over 5,000 entries. The First Part of the Guide covers primary works on intelligence organizations and activities arranged in nine sections : I National Intelligence Establishments; II Collection of Information (includes many case histories of clandestine operations dating from the sixteenth century through the period after World War II); III Research and Analysis ; IV Counterintelligence; V Covert Action (concentrates on the American attempts to support foreign governments or leaders in Chile, Cuba, Iran, and Vietnam); VI Subversion (covers Communist and Nazi secret political penetrations throughout the world); VII Intelligence Support lists titles describing administrative and technical support required for the conduct of intelligence activities; VIII Legal and Moral Considerations; IX Criticisms and Exposes. The Second Part, grouped into thirteen diverse intelligence-related topics, lists books and articles dealing with events or subjects that contain illuminating material relevant to one or more of the intelligence functions that are described in the First Part. Some of the prime topics are assassinations, international crime (including smuggling and narcotics trade), escape and evasion, political dissent, psychological warfare, and unconventional warfare. The activities of terrorists, guerrillas, mercenaries, and revolutionary movements without foreign sponsorship are included. In addition, the Second Part contains histories of most of the conventional wars and warfare dating, in general, from the American Revolution to the date of publication. Very Good in a dustwrapper with long closed tear across rear panel and several short mainly closed edge tears.
