First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Bois (Sketches) (illustrator). First Edition. Rare. Large 8 7/8" x 11 5/8" design. Tan boards, cover titles, moderate shelf wear, rub. Thick, deckled leaves, crisp, clean. Bind good; hinges intact. From limitation page: "One hundred copies only have been printed of this special edition on Batchelors hand-made paper by Arthurs Press Ltd. at Woodchester in the county of Gloucester. This Copy Is No. __." A World War II era political parody, and an amusing imitation of familiar English poetry that deliberately and openly scorns and ridicules Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler, and other leading figures in the Nazi regime in a satirical way. The author of this book was not concerned with the rights and wrongs of Hitler and Hitlerism. The aim was to appeal to the English sense of humor during the War. The black-out, the limited wireless programmes, the curtailed transport services all contributed to the Englishman s thirst for laughter. It was in this spirit that this book was compiled. There is no venom or vicious intention, either in pen or picture, within these pages. Its aspiration was to provide a laugh during the dreary days of Nazi gloom with poems which every Brit knew, or should have known. The poetry was merely re-written and illustrated for the wartime requirements. The clever cutting-edge comedy of English whimsy strikes the ringleaders of the Nazi hierarchy where it hurts. The amusing rhymes and whimsical dialogue provoke a continuous stream of laughter. Includes some choice bits and numerous illustrations add further spice. When, on Sunday 3rd of September, 1939, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that Britain was at war with Germany, it came as no surprise to listeners. Three days earlier the television service had closed down in readiness, and all the BBC's regional services had been amalgamated into a single station - the Home Service - for the whole country. Closing down regional services was in part a security measure. An identifiable service from a regional transmitter would act as a beacon for the incoming Luftwaffe. But it was also to facilitate communication. A single, flexible service that could be interrupted for essential bulletins and public announcements would be easier to manage. The trouble was nobody liked it. Under siege, the nation needed light relief. This book provided that. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

First Edition
First edition, first printing. Publisher's original paper covered boards with titles in black, ruled in red to the upper board. 4to. Printed on hand made Batchelors paper by Arthur's Press Ltd. of Woodchester, Gloucester. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding ever so slightly bowed is otherwise square and tight with only a few superficial marks to the delicate paper covers. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. Other than some offsetting to the page opposite the illustrations the contents are clean and bright throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Scarce in this condition. The entire printing was limited to only 100 copies of which this is numbered 4. Compiled in the spirit and celebration of the English sense of humour amongst the blackouts, limited wireless programs, curtailed transport services and worries of war. Both the author and illustrator at the time of publication were working in the publicity department of MGM's London office. They take poems "which everyone knows - or if they don't, should know" - and rewrite and illustrate them "for more modern requirements". The Imperial War Museum in London holds the private papers of the illustrator, Squadron Leader E. G. W. Wood. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
