Book
Soft cover. Condition: Good. Published in Manchester England circa 1910, this is a scarce penny dreadful format edition of this account of the Famous Red Barn Murder was a notorious murder committed in Polstead, Suffolk, England, in 1827. A young woman, Maria Marten, was shot dead by her lover, William Corder. The two had arranged to meet at the Red Barn, a local landmark, before eloping to Ipswich. Maria was never heard from again. Corder fled the scene and, although he sent Marten's family letters claiming she was in good health, her body was later discovered buried in the barn after her stepmother spoke of having dreamt about the murder. Corder was tracked down in London, where he had married and started a new life. He was brought back to Suffolk, and after a well-publicised trial, found guilty of murder. He was hanged in Bury St Edmunds in 1828; a huge crowd witnessed Corder's execution. The story provoked numerous articles in the newspapers, and songs and plays. The village where the crime had taken place became a tourist attraction and the barn was stripped by souvenir hunters. The plays and ballads remained popular throughout the next century and continue to be performed today . The book is printed in an old penny dreadful style format, though in this case it cost three pennies, thin printed paper wrappers, 8.25 inches tall approx., 32 pages. The book is printed on thin cheap paper which has browned throughout, some marking to covers, the spine has been strengthened with acid free museum archival tape, some corner creasing, old ownership stamp to front cover and title page, else in acceptable condition. this is a lighter item, shipping costs will be reduced accordingly at checkout where possible. A VERY SCARCE PENNY DREADFUL STYLE PRINTING OF THE ACCOUNT OF THIS FAMOUS MURDER TRIAL.

Soft orange pictorial card covers with some rubbing/chipping to edges/spine, a few small tears/creases, tear & tape repair to front, some scuffing/soiling. Contents fair with minor creasing/soiling, some page edges uncut and a little ragged in places, tape repair to one corner. A 'Penny Dreadful' type booklet containing the sensationalist account of the life of the nun Maria Monk (1816-1849). Monk's story was first published in 1836. It is an exposé of the systematic sexual abuse of nuns and infanticide of resulting children by Catholic priests in her convent in Montreal. It is now largely discredited and considered by scholars to be an anti-Catholic hoax. This booklet is dated to around 1910 based on the titles on the back cover - the Johnson v Jeffries fight and the execution of Crippen took place in 1910 and I estimate this booklet dates to shortly after this. Contents clean & tight but for very minor soiling/browning, staples rusted. A 'Penny Dreadful' type booklet giving a sensationalist account of the early life of John 'Babbacombe' Lee (1864-1945), famous for surviving three attempts at his execution. Lee was a thief who in 1885 was convicted of the murder of his employer, Emma Keyse at her home in Babbacombe Bay in Devon. Despite the evidence against him being circumstantial, he was sentenced to death by hanging. The executioner charged with carrying out the sentence was the renowned hangman, John Berry, known for his meticulous checking of equipment prior to an execution and his refinement of the long-drop method, aimed at reducing the suffering of the prisoner. On 23rd February 1885, Berry made 3 unsuccessful attempts to hang Lee, but each time the trapdoor in the scaffold failed to open properly, despite testing prior to use. After the 3rd attempt the proceedings were halted and Lee's sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Home Secretary. Lee petitioned for his release and in 1907 he was finally freed. The story is told up to this point, but following on from this, Lee exploited his notoriety, supporting himself by travelling around telling his story. He even became the subject of a silent film. He died in the USA in 1945. This booklet is dated to around 1910 based on the titles on the back cover - the Johnson v Jeffries fight and the execution of Crippen took place in 1910 and I estimate this booklet dates to shortly after this. A 'Penny Dreadful' type booklet giving a sensationalist account of the life story of the notorious murderer & burglar, Charles Peace (1832-1879). Peace was born into a working class family in Sheffield. At the age of 14 he was permanently crippled in an industrial accident at a steel rolling mill. In 1854 he was convicted of carrying out multiple burglaries and sentenced to 6 years penal servitude. In 1876 he fatally wounded a police officer during an attempted burglary but another man was erroneously convicted of the crime. Later that same year Peace fatally shot a Mr Dyson, the husband of a woman with whom he had become obsessed. Peace escaped and moved to Peckham. During the following year he was responsible for more burglaries in the Blackheath area. He was eventually apprehended during a robbery which resulted in a shoot-out. A 'Penny Dreadful' type booklet giving a sensationalist account of the story of the notorious grave-robbers and murderers William Burke (1872-1829) and William Hare. Burke & Hare are believed to have committed 16 murders in order to supply bodies for money for anatomical study. There was a shortage of suitable bodies in early 19th century Edinburgh so to remedy this the duo started murdering lodgers in Hare's house. Most were sold to the eminent anatomist Robert Knox. The duo's crimes were eventually uncovered. Hare turned King's evidence against Burke, and he was found guilty and sentence to death. He was hanged in 1829, his body dissected and his skeleton put on display at Edinburgh Medical School. Hare was released and his final fate is unknown.
