Cloth, 4to, vi, 250 pp. Covers: " (1). Books written wholly or partly in Spanish or Portuguese, no matter where published; (2) Books, in no matter what language, published or printed at any place which today forms part of Spain or Portugal. The catalogue does not include works written by Spaniards or Portuguese in other languages, or Spanish or Portuguese works translated into other languages, if they were published outside Spain or Portugal: a Latin work by Juan Luis Vives published in England, for example, does not qualify for admission. The geographical boundaries are those of Spain and Portugal today; Latin works printed in Mexico, for example, are not included. The period covered is 1601 to 1700 inclusive. To qualify for admission, a book must have been printed, in whole or in part, within these limits of time. A book which bears no date is included if there is evidence, or even a prima facie probability, that it was printed during the period." Minor bump to fore-edge of front board, otherwise Very Good.

Cloth, 8vo, 292 pp From a contemporary review: "Professor Collie's bibliography is divided into five parts - novels and short stories; other prose; poems; collected editions; and translations. Within these sections there are significant subdivisions: collections of letters in book form; contributions to newspapers and periodicals; a census of poems; locations of manuscripts; and, in an appendix, a chronological listing of all Meredith's publications. Each work is described in detail (including title-page, collation, and binding) and there is an account of the publishing history, often very fulL Thus, for Diana of the crossways, each of the three volumes of the first edition is individually described; there is a note on the two reissues in the year of first publication; a detailed account of serial publication ; location of manuscripts; and, finally, a lengthy account, with a table, of the relationship of the manuscripts to the first edition. This volume will be essential to Meredith scholars and of considerable interest to many others." Very Good in duststained and price-clipped dustwrapper.

Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, 372 pp, plates. A reprint of the classic biographical and bibliographical account of Wise, which was expanded from the American edition published in 1939 as "Forging Ahead ". Highly readable, well-illustrated and fascinating. "This work, first published in America in 1939, and issued in a revised and extended British edition in 1947, is the first biographical and critical study of the perpetrator of the most original and extensive series of forgeries in British literary history, and as such it remains a standard work for students of bibliography. Wise, a wealthy merchant, was renowned as a bookman, a collector, and as the compiler of a unique group of bibliographies and catalogues. In 1934, towards the close of his brilliant career, it was revealed that over fifty pamphlets by such authors as the Brownings, Swinburne, Kipling and Ruskin whose rarity and importance he had made known, were mostly forgeries. Wilfred Partington's study is based on information given to him by Wise, and the (then) exclusive use of private papers of well known men with whom Wise formed associations. He clearly establishes Wise's guilt and tells how the fraudulent printings were 'promoted'. The drama of the exposure, the shock of the British Museum authorities who had bought Wise's library for the nation are given full treatment too. The appendix, by George Bernard Shaw gives his own view of Wise and his friends and another gives a detailed bibliography of Wise's works both genuine and fraudulent." - from the blurb.
