Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm heavy vinyl record album, Decca High Fidelity Long Play (mono) DL 8567, very-good-plus vinyl wearing the old silver-on-black labels in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket which is stamped with the circled letter "T" to top of verso. This 1957 entry is not exactly rock 'n roll (though jacket back cover does advertise Bill Haley's "Rock 'n Roll Stage Show" and the soundtrack to "Rock Pretty Baby," with Sal Mineo and John Saxon.) Rather, the slow-dancing vocal duo (Al Alberts and Dave Mahoney, backed by Rosario "Sod" Voccaro on trumpet and Lou Silvestri on drums) who had big hits earlier in the fifties with "Tell Me Why" (Gold & Alberts, not Lennon & McCartney) and "Heart and Soul," here offer "Have You Ever Been Lonely (Have You Ever Been Blue)", "Peg O' My Heart," "Heartaches," "There I've Said It Again" eight others of the same ilk. No, the reason this album makes our "Weird Vinyl" collection is the color jacket cover photo of (supposed) teen-agers (supposedly) doing "The Shuffle." Not that we have anything against small people, mind you. But for this cover shoot, did the folks at Decca actually recruit a group of dwarves.…

(Vinyl could pass for "near fine" save that record plays through a strange white frosted appearance to final track of Side One -- "Cabin," by Paul Bowles & Tennessee Williams (see scans.) Vinyl disc is in a soft, transparent plastic inner sleeve -- could be an aftermarket sleeve, since it looks big enough to hold a full-sized, 12-inch LP, but as the disc came in this thing and it's doing the job we have left it as found. The slow-breathing Miss Southern, who doesn't exactly jump the jive, also offers Cole Porter's "Ev'rytime We Say Goodbye," Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy," the Kern-Hammerstein standard "All In Fun," four others. Very-good-plus vinyl which easily plays through a few dimples (as made), in a glossy very-good-plus cardboard jacket with previous owner's name scrawled to verso. The 1949 Paramount epic starred the handsome but wooden Victor Mature (told to drop 30 pounds for the role) and the incomparable Hedy Lamarr, who in this case appears to have agreed to (been allowed to?) actually do some acting. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl record album, Decca Dl 74608, near-mint vinyl in a very-good-plus cardboard jacket. Yes, young Eric was a good-looking lad with a confident stage manner. But with the British Invasion already looming, what was sleepy Decca Records doing, sending him out there in 1964 with this virtually "hit-less" playlist leading off with Cooper & West's "I'm A Fool," Jerry Fuller's "I Tried," and Chuck Berry afterthought "I'm Talking About You"? And not even backed up by his James Burton band, but by "Orchestra Directed by Jimmie Haskell"? Rick's only Number One hits had come in 1958 and 1961 with "Poor Little Fool" and "Travelin' Man / Hello Mary Lou." He dropped out of the top 40 entirely after 1962 and only climbed back to the Number 6 spot a decade later with his refreshing "Garden Party," backed by his own Stone Canyon Band. Was Rick Nelson just too well-behaved.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Simulated Stereo" record album, Decca DL 75125, very-good-plus vinyl in a very good cardboard jacket, which includes 12 cuts, 6 per side (which is odd, since the original radio episodes were 30 minutes -- presumably 22 or so minus the ads. But even shorn of cereal ads, "How He Became The Lone Ranger, Part 1 and Part 2," here runs seven minutes, meaning it's been edited down by two-thirds. Next come "He finds Silver, Part 1 and Part 2," then "He Finds Dan Reid, Part 1 and Part 2," all on one side. Meantime, why Decca opted to devote the jacket's entire front panel to the old joke that sees the Ranger and his faithful Indian companion coming under Indian attack, at which point Tonto delivers the time-worn punchline "What you mean WE, paleface?" we can't imagine. Though, combined with the chain-saw editing of the original episodes, we must conclude the Decca gang simply evinced no respect for the (admittedly somewhat derivative) mythmaking of WXYZ station owner George Trendle and scriptwriter Fran Striker -- and wasn't about to waste time soliciting cast photos. Disc now reduced from $14.…
