Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In anthropology, cross-cultural research is fundamental. In relation to "mothering," cross-cultural research becomes enlightening, not only to understand the practices of so-called Others, but also to understanding ourselves. The Anthropology of Mothering has developed fairly unnoticed until the last couple of years, when an increase of research, attention, and respect has suddenly appeared. Geographically, this anthology focuses on places and populations from Canada, the United States, Central and South America, the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The experiences and ideas represented within this volume are much more than geographically diverse, as Indigenous and immigrant, rural and urban, religious and secular populations are represented, as well as one chapter focused on primate and hominid mothering. Through the consideration of the experiences of grandmothers, au pairs, biological and adoptive mothers, mothers of soldiers, mothers of children with autism, mothers in the corrections system, among others, it becomes clear that human mothering is neither practiced nor experienced the same the world over - indeed, even a single definition of what "mothering" is cannot be formed by the contribu- tors of this anthology. Instead, while ideas of 'good' mothering exist in every culture, the effects of colonialism and migration, as well as different understandings of and relationships to food, religion, and government play prominent among many other factors, includ- ing age, relationship status, and sexuality of mothers themselves, to affect what is understood as 'good' versus 'bad' mothering.…

Condition: Good. Mama Sex: How a Perfect Storm Caused a Revolution exposes why the most transgressive thing a mother can do in our society is to prioritize her own pleasure. Tackling one of the last cultural taboos -- maternal sexuality -- Mama Sex aims to open its readers eyes to how modern society is f*cking with the sex lives of mothers. Written from an anthropological perspective, Mama Sex is part deeply researched historical guide, part personal narrative of a modern mother (former Curator of the Museum of Sex), and part prescriptive support on how to change your sex life. Combining academic research, surveys, and interviews with mothers and field experts, Mama Sex not only addresses the identity-changing transition of becoming a mother (matrescence) and our historical maternal lineage (all the people, places, and spaces from which we inherit our worldviews), but also the personal liberation that is possible through tackling these ideas head on.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. There has been little public discussion on the devastating impact of Covid-19 on mothers, or a public acknowledgement that mothering is frontline work in this pandemic. This collection of 45 chapters and with 70 contributors is the first to explore the impact of the pandemic on mothers' care and wage labour in the context of employment, schooling, communities, families, and the relationships of parents and children. With a global perspective and from the standpoint of single, partnered, queer, racialized, Indigenous, economically disadvantaged, disabled, and birthing mothers, the volume examines the increasing complexity and demands of childcare, domestic labour, elder care, and home schooling under the pandemic protocols; the intricacies and difficulties of performing wage labour at home; the impact of the pandemic on mothers' employment; and the strategies mothers have used to manage the competing demands of care and wage labour under COVID-19. By way of creative art, poetry, photography, and creative writing along with scholarly research, the collection seeks to make visible what has been invisibilized and render audible what has been silenced: the care and crisis of motherwork through and after the COVID-19 pandemic.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In this revolutionary volume, as part of their overall effort to advocate for the rights of Aboriginal women, D. Memee LavellHarvard and Jeannette Corbiere Lavell have brought together a multitude of voices to speak on the issues facing Aborigi- nal mothers in contemporary society. Beginning with an ex- amination of the experience of childbirth-the initiation into motherhood-the contributing authors illustrate its potential as a source of empowerment and revitalization for our nations. Through their own unique perspectives, the women bring us to an understanding of the variety of Aboriginal mothering prac- tices, the impacts of colonization and government legislation on Aboriginal mothers, and literary representations of Aborigi- nal mothering. Together, these women have worked to reveal not only the connection between the longstanding historical oppression experienced by Aboriginal women and the dire contemporary circumstances of many Aboriginal communities, but also the power of Aboriginal mothers to revitalize and transform our communities. They are truly the givers of new life.…
