When eighteen-year-old Jerry Payne first meets Pookie Adams at the Friarsburg, Oklahoma, bus depot, he is hardly aware that this moment marks the beginning of the most memorable love affair of his life. Overwhelmed (and yet secretly enchanted) by her zany, rambling monologue, Jerry is relieved to leave her in St. Louis as he continues to New York. Thinking he's seen the last of her, he heads off to college, only to be pursued by seventeen lengthy letters, and before he knows it he's involved with a seemingly crazy, startlingly honest girl who adores him. During the next two years, Pookie helps Jerry leave behind the fun-seeking, beer-blasted fraternity man he has become, as she teaches him to open his heart to her. Then, almost as suddenly as she appeared in his life, she disappears from it, leaving in her wake an eternal trail of love and wonder. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 210 pages.

Plans for Easton began in 1737 by William Penn. The first German Lutheran settlers began to occupy the region and were served by missionaries and preachers. Near the forks of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers of Easton, PA, early German Lutheran settlers and their family and friends met in worship to God. The first minister, John J J Birkenstock began to keep records of the Lutheran congregation in 1740. This date is commonly accepted as the founding of the church. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

"In September 1902 I arrived at Tangier, and several weeks later had the good fortune to direct my footsteps towards Southern Morocco. There I visited Marrakech, as well as Goundafi and Glaoui, the principal valleys of the Great Atlas. Hardly had I returned to Tangier than I had to set out at once for Fez, where I spent six months. The series of letters of which this book is composed, was written under canvas, in the course of my journey towards the south, and afterwards in the orange-garden assigned to me at Fez by Shereefian hospitality . These letters contain the notes and information which, from the beginning of my stay in Morocco, I set myself to collect, with a view to the better comprehension of the country, possessed for me of characteristics so novel and so strange, in which my lot was to be cast during the most momentous period of its history." A cast of fascinating characters populates the Nebraska farmland where Harrison's fine new novel is set. First among these is Dalva Northridge, a passionate and unconventional woman who, at 45, begins searching for the illegitimate son she bore 30 years earlier. While flashbacks explore Dalva's teenage romance with her son's father, a half-Sioux youth, the story is carried forward through Dalva's current relationships with her wealthy family and with Michael, a history professor. The middle portion of the book, narrated by the alcoholic and debauched Michael, brings a shift in mood. Michael, who is living at the Northridge family ranch while researching journals left by Dalva's great-grandfather, proceeds toward his own incapacitation at a Rabelaisian pitch. Woven through Michael's narrative are excerpts from the journals, which have a great relevance to the history of Nebraska's Native Americans. Harrison (Sundog) offers almost an embarrassment of riches here. Digressing stories of a large number of characterswhile they add to the rich texture of the novelsometimes deflect attention from Dalva herself. That is a small caveat, however, about this lyrical and atmospheric book, which is entertaining, moving and memorable. ; 9.3 X 6.1 X 1.3 inches; 324 pages.

The stories, originally published in The New Yorker magazine, concern Franny and Zooey Glass, two members of the family that was the subject of most of Salinger's short fiction. Franny is an intellectually precocious late adolescent who tries to attain spiritual purification by obsessively reiterating the "Jesus prayer" as an antidote to the perceived superficiality and corruptness of life. She subsequently suffers a nervous breakdown. In the second story, her next older brother, Zooey, attempts to heal Franny by pointing out that her constant repetition of the "Jesus prayer" is as self-involved and egotistical as the egotism against which she rails. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 201 pages.

If a novel may be described as an education in people, problems and places, Mr. Hamner has a claim to being a good teacher. Not everyone will want to sit in on a demonstration of life among the Holy Rollers in a small Virginia mountain town, of course, but those who do will find their sympathies as well as their interest, engaged. The book is picturesque in its psychological oddities and setting. But it does not so lose itself in hillbilly comedy and terror as to alienate the reader's sense of compassion. Indeed, it goes to the sorrowful core of the human condition. Edensville, where moonshine whisky is called "glad tidings" and the ladies turn cottonfeed sacks into dresses and bloomers, comes feverishly alive on the day that the Rev. Otha sets up his big revival tent on Ossie Peeler's pasture. Otha is in a powerful state of confusion when we meet him: he sees himself as "becoming more and more the Returned Christ" and looks forward to the time when he will surround himself with his own twelve disciplesall women. A high-powered talker of the "old-fashioned, sky-blue, no-holds-barred revival," he is hypocrite and fanatic combined. It is, finally, his lustfulness that brings on the climax of the story, a strange mixture of happiness and tragedy involving love, murder and human loneliness. In the end everybody has reason to remember Otha: the desperately frustrated Ossie with her memory of one night in a hotel room; her addle-brained husband with his home-made coffin and the wing-bound goldfinch in his shirt; her mother of the long grievings of memory; and her daughter, pretty enough to set fire to wet hay. Otha will stay with the reader, too, along with three decapitated wrens, Fate Bibbs' striped shirt and the burial of Tennessee Tessie with a live rattlesnake. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
