En 1974, un años después de descubrirse la cuenca carbonífera de Puertollano, se afirmaba que este feliz acontecimiento se había producido por una insignificante piedra y la casualidad peregrina de haberse fijado en ella un minero transeúnte. Este hecho fortuito fue el responsable, graci…as al crecimiento industrial experimentado, de la estructura y configuración de la ciudad de Puertollano que hoy conocemos. Como hitos más importantes hay que destacar la actuación de la Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya (SMMP), el descubrimiento de las pizarras bituminosas, la construcción de las instalaciones industriales de Calatrava, la puesta en marcha del pozo Norte, el cierre de la minería subterránea, la construcción del complejo petroquímico, la reactivación de la cuenca con la aparición de Encasur y la minería a cielo abierto, la instalación de las centrales térmicas y el cierre definitivo de la actividad minera. En este libro se hace un recorrido cronológico, con marcado carácter histórico, por todos estos acontecimientos concatenados entre sí a lo largo de 150 años. Conocer y comprender el pasado es primordial para entender el presente y construir el futuro. Puertollano ha demostrado a lo largo de su historia minero-industrial una gran capacidad de desarrollo, crecimiento y adaptación a las circunstancias, lo que le ha permitido convertirse en el foco industrial más importante de Castilla La Mancha y en uno de los principales núcleos económicos de la mitad sur peninsular.
