Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The phantom dog of Dartmoor, which, according to an ancient legend, has haunted the Baskervilles for generations. When Sir Charles Baskerville dies suddenly of a heart attack on the grounds of the family's estate, the locals are convinced that the spectral hound is responsible, and Holmes is called in. Conan Doyle triumphed and triumphed deservedly, G. K. Chesterton wrote, because he took his art seriously, because he lavished a hundred little touches of real knowledge and genuine picturesqueness on the police novelette.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. A bold translation of Nobel Prize-winner Herman Hesse's most inspirational and beloved work, which was nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read A Penguin Classic Hesse's famous and influential novel, Siddartha, is perhaps the most important and compelling moral allegory our troubled century has produced. Integrating Eastern and Western spiritual traditions with psychoanalysis and philosophy, this strangely simple tale, written with a deep and moving empathy for humanity, has touched the lives of millions since its original publication in 1922. Set in India, Siddhartha is the story of a young Brahmin's search for ultimate reality after meeting with the Buddha. His quest takes him from a life of decadence to asceticism, through the illusory joys of sensual love with a beautiful courtesan, and of wealth and fame, to the painful struggles with his son and the ultimate wisdom of renunciation. This new translation by award-winning translator Joachim Neugroschel includes an introduction by Hesse biographer Ralph Freedman. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Speaking for myself, I have already had more than my full measure of this exquisite enjoyment, so much that for many years my life was little short of continuous rapture. I am credited with being one of the hardest workers and perhaps I am, if thought is the equivalent of labor, for I have devoted to it almost all of my waking hours. But if work is interpreted to be a definite performance in a specified time according to a rigid rule, then I may be the worst of idlers. Every effort under compulsion demands a sacrifice of life-energy. I never paid such a price. On the contrary, I have thrived on my thoughts. In attempting to give a connected and faithful account of my activities in this series of articles which will be presented with the assistance of the Editors of the ELECTRICAL EXPERIMENTER and are chiefly addressed to our young men readers, I must dwell, however reluctantly, on the impressions of my youth and the circumstances and events which have been instrumental in determining my career. Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, mechanical engineer, and electrical engineer. He was an important contributor to the birth of commercial electricity, and is best known for developing the modern alternating current (AC) electrical supply system. Tesla's patents and theoretical work also formed the basis of wireless communication and the radio.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Backgrounds and Contexts is divided into three sections, each of which includes a concise introduction by Michael Gorra that carefully frames the issues presented, with particular attention to As I Lay Dying's place in Faulkner's literary life. Contemporary Reception reprints American, English, and French reviews by Clifton Fadiman, Henry Nash Smith, Edwin Muir, and Maurice Coindreau, among others, along with Valery Larbaud's never-before-translated preface to the first French edition of the novel. The Writer and His Work examines Faulkner's claim to have written the novel in six weeks without changing a word. It includes his comments on the book's composition along with his later thoughts on and changing opinions of it, sample pages from the manuscript, his Nobel Prize address, and the little-known short story in which he first used the title. Cultural Context reprints an essay by Carson McCullers and an excerpt from James Agee's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men along with other materials that address questions of Southern Agrarianism and the Southern grotesque.Criticism begins with the editor's introduction to As I Lay Dying's critical history and scholarly reception. Eleven major essays are provided by Olga W. Vickery, Cleanth Brooks, Calvin Bedient, Andr Bleikasten, Eric Sundquist, Stephen M. Ross, Doreen Fowler, Patrick O'Donnell, Richard Gray, John Limon, and Donald M. Kartiganer.A Chronology and a Selected Bibliography are also included.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. A timeless mystical classic. Beloved by Christian women. A beautiful gift. How deeply we who love the Lord of Love, and desire to follow him, long for the power to surmount all difficulties and tests and conflicts in life in the same exultant and triumphant way. To learn the secret of victorious living has been the heart's desire of those in every generation who love the Lord. - Hannah HurnardHinds' Feet on High Places is an allegory of the Christian life, much like The Pilgrim's Progress. The protagonist is not however a Mr. Greatheart, rather she is Much-Afraid. We begin with her in the village of Much-Trembling in the Valley of Humiliation, surrounded by her relatives The Fearings. She is a servant of the Chief Shepherd, whom she deeply desires to please, and she seems to be happy filling her mind with verses from the Song of Songs. Secretly, she feels defeated by life; her mouth is crooked, deforming her face and her speech, and she is crippled, able only to limp and stumble through life. Finally, her relatives all hate the Chief Shepherd, and are about to force her to marry Craven Fear whom she despises. Her dream is to have feet like a hind's that will carry her gracefully to the High Places, far from the Valley of Humiliation and into the Kingdom of Love. The book is an extended meditation on the victorious life, and on the Song of Songs. It is far from sentimental. Although it is an allegory, its protagonist, Much-Afraid, is a very real character, because she is partly based on Hannah Hurnard. This realism fully engages the reader, and is one of the reasons that Hind's Feet on High Places has powerfully moved so many.Hannah Hurnard was born in 1905 in Colchester, England, to Quaker parents. She suffered many phobias and, in addition, had a stutter. Growing up she did not feel the presence of God in any way, but rather found the Bible and all things religious intensely boring. At the age of nineteen, all that dramatically changed, and she felt that God was asking her to serve him with her stuttering mouth. She developed a love of the Bible, went to Bible College, and then to Haifa, Israel as a missionary. She became a successful writer. Hind's Feet on High Places is her most famous book.…
