Hardback. Dust Jacket. Both in Good condition . Green cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Dust Jacket rubbed and chipped to edges. repaired and now in clear protective covering. Front cover of Dust Jacket shows a sketch of Brahms at the age of twenty by Laurens (1853). Inscribed to half title page. Price clipped. Foxing to end papers and page edges. 352 Pages with many illustrations. Since the appearance of the last biography of Johannes Brahms, much new and important material concerning him has become available. In the archives of Viennese Society of the Friends of Music, Dr Geiringer has discovered more than a thousand letters written by Brahms or addressed to him, and held hitherto under legal seal, and the new biography is enriched by letters of Brahms's parents and eminent contemporaries, such as Robert and Clara Schumann, Anton Dvorak, Sir George Grove, Sir George Henschel, Mathilde Wesendonck, and others. This extensive material inevitably throws freash and important light upon Brahms's character and the events of his life, and no less upon the persons whith whom his life was bound up. The author has also had access to many original manuscripts and printed copies in which Brahms himself inserted corrections, which have not so far been used by biographers. The book is divided into two parts, the biography proper and a critical section in which each category of the master's compositions is considered separately, a final chapter treats of Brahms's character as man and artist. It is a fascinating study, the value of which will be fully appreciated by all music lovers.
