Paperback. Condition: Very Good. "You're a shit ref and you should fuck off back to England!" For almost six years, writer and referee Ian Plenderleith has been chronicling his adventures at the lowest end of the amateur and youth football leagues in and around Frankfurt am Main. Through parental mass brawls, on-field fistfights, choleric coaches, foul-mouthed threats, abandoned games and drunken groundsmen, he endures a never-ending lack of respect and sportsmanship, plus the odd moment of reward, humour and half-decent behaviour. Yet every game, no matter how poor the players and how down-at-heel the league they're playing in, tells a story. Every encounter with a single round ball as its focal sphere reflects some facet of the human condition. Raw human emotion comes to the fore over 90 fraught minutes in the form of rage, deceit, scorn, bile and naked aggression. And the stupid referee, that lonely faceless neutral, is of course almost always to blame. Find out what's really going on inside a referee's head during a game. Is he scared? Sometimes. Is he biased? Of course not. Does he feel a warm and almost overwhelming glow of Schadenfreude when the striker who screamed in his face two minutes ago about an offside decision then misses an open goal from two yards out? In short, yes he certainly does, and it's often enough to sustain his motivation to keep on refereeing. Meet regulars such as Danny, the youth team coach who is polite and charming before the game, but who can control neither his mouth nor his temper come kick-off. Horst the unsteady groundsman, whose wobbly touchlines reflect what he's already imbibed before noon on a Sunday. Harry, the vocal centre back who can most kindly be described as "a monster of mentality". And the writer's wife, offering solace, counsel and tentative suggestions that he might want to spend more weekends with his family rather than ending up in hospital. One short step from the action, the writer describes his afternoons in charge of "the men who only play for fun, but never seem to be having any. The average, the bad and the hopeless. The unsightly, the unfit and the sporadically unhinged." And to conclude that sport does indeed bring people together. Even though it's mostly to yell at each other and - for his outrageous application of the Laws of the Game - at the terrible referee too. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. In January 2020, Liam Walsh's 15-year old son Patrick went to a football game with his brother and never came home. He collapsed as they dashed for the last train out of Marylebone and died, suddenly, unexpectedly and still, without cause. Two weeks later, Liam's Dad, with his sense of purpose desperately unravelled, gently died too. 'Red Balloons' traces their last months, and how Liam endured the next ones. It's a book to preserve them - the beating heart of their stories. All their senses too, their very being. Literally, their lives, and Liam's memoir. It's about how each season of hope and each despair tightened the family's ties to Swindon Town Football Club, and imperceptibly to each other. There's a promotion, albeit with an asterisk and a subsequent demoralising relegation. There are roasted peanuts at Tottenham, an octogenarian John Terry at cricket, the man forever in red trousers at horse racing and bandwagon jumping with Munster rugby. There's music and the lullabies of Christy Moore as Liam's Dad slipped away. Liam explores his English accented Irish identity, through mountains, a magical encounter with a blood-stained farmer and Waterford's desperate hurling odyssey. It's about scattering ashes on the bleakest day imaginable and finding meaning in vapour trails. There's a mumbling World War One graveside appearance on French prime time TV. There's a ginger cat and wearing novelty hats on the front page of the Swindon Advertiser. Yearning in the dreich of Edinburgh and leaving stickers in Sharjah. While other precious people die through the story, Liam finds renewed energy through community and connections, running and robins. It's a desolate, yet hopeful journey through grief and the forlorn search for answers about Patrick's death, seeking reassurance that the rest of us won't drop dead, without warning. More than anything, it's a family footballing love story. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Is it possible to watch too much sport? And can you really get square eyes? One Man. 365 days. Multiple screens. Always different, always the same, the sporting calendar is firmly entrenched in our everyday lives. Astonishingly, some people manage to live in this godforsaken country without this perennial comfort blanket. Steve Hill is not one of them. Utterly dependent on a heady cocktail of live drama simply to make it through the day, Hills year is dominated by the sporting seasons, each new dawn promising endless, pointless possibilities. Whether in bed, the bath, or on the sofa, he remains plugged into the matrix on a variety of devices, chasing sport around the globe. On the rare occasions he does leave the house, its primarily to watch more sport. Interspersed with anecdotes from the basement of journalism, Wall Of Sport is the daily diary of a screen addict. It also provides a comprehensive sporting almanac of the momentous year that was 2018, before the world of sport was turned on its head. Without sport, there is only weather. If you dont want to know the score, look away now. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…
