Full-Leather. Condition: Poor. Second Edition. Second edition from 1778, Revised and Augmented, in ten volumes but missing volumes II and III: I (352 introduction and 372pp plays), IV (611pp), V (615pp), VI (566pp), VII (500pp), VIII (562pp), IX (573pp) and X (632pp). Contemporary full leather binding. The title and volume number panels have been lost on all the volumes apart from one of the volume number panels. The spines have gilt decorations to them with these being rather worn. The spines have chipping at the tops and bottoms. There is also significant cracking to the edges with several of the volumes having detached boards. The corners are bumped with some rubbing and fraying and there is some light surface wear to the front and rear panels. Marbled endpapers at the front and back. Name of a previous owner in ink to the blank pages following the front free endpapers - Lady Wale of Shelford near Cambridge - and there is the bookplate of another family member to the front pastedown of six of the volumes. Browning and some spotting to the pages at the front and back. Volume I has a detached front board and the page immediately after the front free endpaper is loose. This page has a gift message in ink dated 1779. There is some staining to the top halves of the pages in the first half of the book and a little cracking to the surface of the spine. Volume IV has some cracking along the edge of the rear panel with some loosening but it is still attached and there is a little creasing to the edges of pages 323 to 330. Volume V has detached front and rear boards with a vertical crease down the page preceding the endpapers at the rear. Volume VI has a detached front board and the page immediately after the front free endpaper is loose Volume VII has a front board which is attached but separated along most of its length and there are three pieces missing from the surface of the spine. There is also a little staining to the top right corner of the front panel, some staining at the tops of the pages through to page 160 and small creases to the top corners of pages 317 to 334. Volume IX has a detached front board and there is a small chip missing from the surface of the spine at the top. Volume VIII has a detached front board. Volume IX has a detached front board and the page immediately after the front free endpaper is loose. Volume IX has a detached front board and there is a small chip missing from the surface of the spine at the top. There is light browning to the pages with some spots and marks in places and in particular to the pages at the front of the books but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. Heavy item due to it being eight volumes so there will be an additional postage charge for overseas orders.

ESTC T13872 Foxmark (1cm) extending from rhs of engraved face on title page; three other pin head fox marks to title; very occasional mark thereafter. John Gay (1685-1732) was an. English poet and dramatist, chiefly remembered as the author of The Beggar's Opera, a work distinguished by good-humoured satire and technical assurance. His poetry was much influenced by that of Alexander Pope, who was a contemporary and close friend. Gay was a member, together with Pope, Jonathan Swift, and John Arbuthnot, of the Scriblerus Club, a literary group that aimed to ridicule pedantry. This Darton & Harvey edition, printed the same year as the first Stockdale edition contains two plates to a page which very closely copy (often reversed) those in the Stockdale; "most notably in this respect is the strikingly Blakean shepherd imitated from Blakes first engraving". (A little rubbed). Some light foxing and soiling, and offsetting from the plates (two with short closed tears). A good copy in a handsome binding. The illustrations are copies of the 1793 Stockdale edition, re-engraved in oval form. They include 12 after designs by William Blake. The life of the author is taken from Johnson's Lives of the English Poets.

R1 has a small tear to leading edge and also at gutter, R2 similar tear to gutter. Owner's name to ffep neatly done in ink along with date of 1779. Book.
