(Paperback, 1971). (1953) later paperback reprint. Small 8vo paperback (109 x 180mm). Pp151. Illustrated with line drawings by W.J. Pezare, and with 8 half-tone plates based on those in Houghton's British Fresh Water Fishes. Covers creased and slightly rubbed. A used but good second-hand paperback. "An Aldine Paperback." "Many thousands have enjoyed Fishing for Beginners, and its issue as a paperback will increase its usefulness in teaching the enthusiast why fishermen fish, how they fish and how it can be enjoyed. The author - who has made many friends as Angling Correspondent of the Sunday Times - assumes that his readers know nothing about the art and does not rest until he has told the reader enough to enable him to go off for the week-end fishing trip on his own." .

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm. xviii, 302 pp, 4 plates. From the blurb - "John Skelton, poet-laureate of Oxford and later of Cambridge University, tutor to the prince who was to reign as King Henry VIII, rector of Diss, and the last poet of medieval England, stands midway between the Chaucerian school and the Italian influences of Wyatt and Surrey which heralded the English Renaissance. In his heyday Skelton made his mark as a political and social satirist through his verses. A complex man, he was the last of the great medieval satirists, and his holy orders did not prevent his undisguised appreciation of feminine beauty 'the merriest poet of Merry England'. For reasons explained by Pollet in a masterly chapter, Skelton became, soon after his death, a traditional figure of low comedy, and three hundred years were to pass before his work was restored to the ranks of serious literature with appraisals by Southey, Elizabeth Barrett and later Robert Graves, H. L. R. Edwards and others. Maurice Pollet s study is the major French contribution to the subject, and with its appearance John Skelton has certainly come into his kingdom. The seal has been placed on his recognition as an English classic by one of those magisterial monographs with which French scholars salute English writers of unquestioned eminence. It is lucid, superbly proportioned and organized, richly documented yet never pedantic, pretentious or dull. " Name on front pastedown endpaper, upper fore-edge corner of front free endpaper cut away, otherwise Good in a used and price-clipped dustwrapper.
