Cloth. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Zhenya Gay (illustrator). First Edition. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION AND PRINTING. An expose' of the cruel, misguided 19th century British and Australian penal systems. Introductory notes by Joseph Wood Krutch and The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Birkenhead. From the Introduction: "Ralph Rashleigh (the name is an obvious pseudonym) tells us almost nothing of his antecedents. When he had served out an apprenticeship in London he drifted into ordinary dissipation and bad company and by the latter he was led into crime. After some preliminary experience in issuing false coins he took up housebreaking but was soon apprehended and sentenced to death. More as the result of chance than for any definite reason his sentence was commuted to penal servitude in Australia and before very long he was handed over to the brutal and often sadistic keepers who began the systematic over-working, underfeeding, and reckless flogging, the only form of prison discipline at the time. These events took place in the Nineteenth century but there is little or nothing to remind one of the reforms in criminal law and its administration which are supposed to have taken place during the fifty years which preceded his arrest, received had he been a contemporary of Defoe. Not only was the penalty for robbery still death, but to pile violence upon violence was still absolutely the only recognized method for coping with crime." 349 pages. Former owner's name on front endpaper. Play in covers. Stain to top of spine binding. Some soiling to binding covers. GC4.
