Paperback. Condition: Good. In the spirit of Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet and conceived of as a modern-day vade mecum, Letters to a New Vegan consists of 32 epistles chosen from the hundreds that Tedrowe and Van Kleek received. Paperback. Condition: Good. Orphaned in her early teens and shuttled between abusive foster homes, Tatiana Forero Puerta found herself in her early twenties in New York City, haunted by the memories of her tumultuous youth and suicidal. Following emergency hospitalization, she was advised by her doctor to take up yoga. Over days, weeks, months, and then years, she embraced yoga's honesty and discipline--delving more deeply into its wisdom, literature, and, vitally, its practice. In so doing, yoga healed her scars, opened her soul to forgiveness, and allowed her to reconcile herself with a past that had threatened to snuff out her life. Yoga for the Wounded Heart is an unsparingly honest memoir of a childhood lost and of courage and resilience gained. It's also an exploration of the fundamentals of yoga: as a technology that focuses our awareness; as a practical application of mindfulness and attention to what is really going on in our lives and bodies; and as a vehicle for the body to guide the mind and heart toward healing.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Vietnam veteran and teacher-practitioner of Transcendental Meditation, David Kidd first learned about the issue of global warming in 1988 and decided to do something about it. He discovered that tree seedlings were relatively cheap, and began to coordinate the planting of trees--not merely in the tens, nor the hundreds, nor even the thousands, but in the millions. In eleven years, Kidd, along with over fifteen hundred schools and citizen groups throughout his native Ohio, managed to plant an astonishing 12 million trees. He ran as an independent candidate for the Ohio House of Representatives in 2002 and is a leading environmental activist, with projects in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, with new projects underway each year. These projects are made available to community groups all over the world, as Kidd advocates local communities owning their own work. Growing America is the story of an extraordinary man. It's about a man who made a commitment to be nonviolent when serving in Vietnam; a man who looked for solutions rather than be overwhelmed by global problems; a man who went against the advice of forestry services and bureaucracy and inspired ordinary citizens and local government to make a difference in their neighborhoods, communities, and throughout the state. More than that, Growing America is about civic involvement, of making communities vibrant and healthy, and inspiring all of us to help America flourish.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. New cover, same great book Silencing, subjection, and a struggle for affirmation have forged chains around women since the Fall in Eden. The Heavenly Father wants women to experience a full restoration in who He created them to be - in the home, society, and ministry He wants them to know their valued identity and be empowered by His love. The Empowered Woman reveals how God carefully wove beautiful elements of His likeness into both male and female. Both share common traits of leadership as fiery ones, yet each has individual qualities as God's image as described in these pages. The Hebrew language of Genesis reveals the woman's intimate design for community and connection, as communicators, face-to-face counterparts with men, as visionary leaders with intuition, and even as a warrior bride for divine purpose, and more Learn how the Fall renamed and redefined a woman's identity and how it has played out in life, relationships, and cultures, but how Jesus, the Last Adam, restores her to full authentic design These 212 pages will delight your heart as you realize the truth, freedom and purpose that women are called to experience in Christ as empowered daughters of God for such a time as this.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The author of influential books such as Force Under Pressure and Stoning the Keepers at the Gate, Dr. Lawrence N. Blum is a renowned expert on the psychology of police officers. With Turning Tragedy into Victory, he returns to and expands on the important subject of how to best help those who have sworn to protect and serve when they are the ones who have fallen. According to Blum, officers' lack of knowledge and skill in controlling the stress of the moment has increased their risk of being killed, assaulted, or making mistakes that cost them dearly in career or family relationships. Through visceral, real-life accounts of officers with whom he has personally worked, he identifies pitfalls, errors, and traps that are created when officers lose control over how their brains and bodies react to unexpected crises; explains why and how this lack of control occurs; and provides mental, emotional, and behavioral tools that have proven highly effective at enhancing performance. Above all, Blum says, officers must learn the important lessons that come from their experiences and commit themselves to the quest for mastery in law enforcement--in other words, to turn tragedy into victory. This book is an indispensable resource for law enforcement officers, those who work with them, and the people who wish to keep them safe among the increasing dangers and challenges of today's society.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. We are in a new move of God that some are calling the New American Revolution or even a new Civil War. George Barna calls it the second coming of the Church Though the Church has lost much of her influence in American culture, there is a remnant rising with a strong voice for life, liberty, and true justice. Many Christians have been afraid to speak out about cultural issues, whether because of fear, not knowing what to say or do, or convinced their role is to simply wait for the rapture. Others have misunderstood the truth of what is really meant about separation of Church and state and so have ignored their responsibility of being a citizen of heaven and of earth But God is calling His people to be bold, be informed, and be involved to bring His love, goodness, and righteousness back to society for the healing of a nation. This book gives powerful key insights into current issues and the spiritual warfare behind them, along with prayer and practical action steps you can take to make a difference for this generation and those to come.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. In many situations and throughout the ages, when people have petitioned God for the relief of their suffering, or the suffering of others, God has said No." In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed that the "cup be taken from him," if it be God's will. God answered no. Three times St. Paul begged God to remove the "thorn from his side." Three times God said no. When, says Father Lanahan, my family prayed desperately for my brother Neil to be cured of melanoma, God said no. When we prayedfor a twenty-five-year-old niece to survive a car accident, God said no. When the victims of war in the former Yugoslavia, or in any of the hundred places war is being waged at any given time prayed; when people afflicted with cancer, alcoholism, or AIDS prayed for deliverance; when the victims of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse prayed to be spared, the answer was "No." This book is not another theological or philosophical attempt to provide a rational solution to the divine puzzle of whyGod allows innocent people to suffer or why our prayers in Jesus' name are not effective. This book attempts to provide simple, practical, pastoral insights for the ordinary person who comes to listen to the Word of God when we assemble as Church. When God Says No ends in Heaven. Face to face with God, says Father Lanahan, we will not be given the answer to the question that no theology, no book, not even the Bible, no dogma, no authority, not even that of the Church, has ever answered: Why thesuffering of the innocent? Instead, we will be blessed with the fullness of salvation and healing and made whole at last. We will be with the Answer in love forever. ". …

Paperback. Condition: Good. In Spirituality, Contemplation & Transformation, some of the leading practitioners of centering prayer - the contemporary expression of the Christian contemplative tradition as developed by the desert fathers and mothers and elaborated by mystics such as saints John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila - write about the many and varied benefits of this dynamic and intimate means of connecting with the Divine. Thomas Keating and David Frenette examine the sources of centering prayer Justin Langilleand Jennifer Michael explore different facets of the wisdom of silence and Paul David Lawson, David G.R. Keller, and Tom Macfie explain the vital role centering prayer can play in fostering communities of faith. Cynthia Bourgeault explicates philosopher and spiritual practitioner Beatrice Bruteau's study of the meaning of contemplation Brian Taylor uncovers the positive mental changes that centering prayer can bring about and Thomas Ward reflects on spirituality in the twenty-first century, as wellas the inspiring experience of attending a centering prayer retreat. Of interest to anyone involved with contemporary Christian life, these essays, originally published in the Sewanee Theological Review, contribute to the growing body of literature on centering prayer - its practice, theory, and applications - and offer valuable entry points for all those interested in deepening their spiritual practice and fostering a more profound relationship with the Divine.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Now with a new Afterword on what has happened since the book was first published On April 20, 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, two seniors at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, walked into their school and shot to death twelve students and one teacher, and wounded many others. It was the worst single act of murder at a school in U.S. history. Few people knew Dylan Klebold or Eric Harris better than Brooks Brown. Brown and Klebold were best friends in grade school, and years later, at Columbine, Brown was privy to some of Harris and Klebold's darkest fantasies and most troubling revelations After the shootings, Brown was even accused by the police of having been in on the massacre--simply because he had been friends with the killers. Now, for the first time, Brown, with journalist Rob Merritt, gets to tell his full version of the story. He describes the warning signs that were missed or ignored, and the evidence that was kept hidden from the public after the murders. He takes on those who say that rock music or video games caused Klebold and Harris to kill their classmates and explores what it might have been that pushed these two young men, from supposedly stable families, to harbor such violent and apocalyptic dreams. Shocking as well as inspirational and insightful, No Easy Answers is an authentic wake-up call for all the psychologists, authorities, parents, and law enforcement personnel who have attempted to understand the murders at Columbine High School. As the title suggests, the book offers no easy answers, but instead presents the unvarnished facts about growing up as an alienated teenager in America today. This edition contains a new afterword that describes what the two authors have experienced and learned about Columbine since the publication of the book.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. Wangari Muta Maathai was born in Nyeri, Kenya in 1940. In 1960, she won a Kennedy scholarship to study in America and earned a master's degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh and became the first woman in East Africa to earn a Ph.D. Returning to Kenya in 1966, Wangari Maathai was shocked at the degradation of the forests and the farmland caused by deforestation. Heavy rains had washed away much of the topsoil, silt was clogging the rivers, and fertilizers were depriving the soil of nutrients. Wangari decided to solve the problem by planting trees. Under the auspices of the National Council of Women of Kenya, of which she was chairwoman from 1981 to 1987, she introduced the idea of planting trees through citizen foresters in 1976, and called this new organization the Green Belt Movement (GBM). She continued to develop GBM into broad-based, grassroots organization whose focus was women's groups planting of trees in order to conserve the environment and improve their quality of life. Through the Green Belt Movement, Wangari Maathai has assisted women in planting more than 20 million trees on their farms and on schools and church compounds in Kenya and all over East Africa. In Africa, as in many parts of the world, women are responsible for meals and collecting firewood. Increasing deforestation has not only meant increasing desertification, but it has also meant that women have had to travel further and further afield in order to collect the firewood. This in turn has led to women spending less time around the home, tending to crops, and looking after their children. By staying closer to home, earning income from sustainably harvesting the fruit and timber from trees, women not only can be more productive, they can provide stability in the home. They can also create time for education opportunities--whether for themselves or their children. This virtuous circle of empowerment through conservation is serving as a model throughout the world, where women both individually and collectively are entrusted with money and material to invest it in ways that make a difference to their daily lives. Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement is a great example of how one person can turn around the lives of thousands, if not millions of others, by empowering others to change their situation. Wangari's road to success was by no means easy. During the 1970s and 1980s, she came under increasing scrutiny from the government of Daniel arap Moi. She was frequently the target of vilification from the government, as well as subject to outright attacks and imprisonment. She refused to compromise her belief that the people were best trusted to look after their natural resources, as opposed to the corrupt cronies of the government, who were given whole swathes of public land, which they then despoiled. In December 2002, Wangari Maathai was elected by an overwhelming margin to Parliament, where she is the Assistant Secretary for Environnment, Wildlife, and Natural Resources in the democratically elected Kibaki government. Even though she is now being protected by the very same soldiers who once arrested her, her voice on behalf of the environment is still strong and determined. In October 2004, she capped a lifetime of incredible achievements when she was awarded the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. In The Green Belt Movement, founder Wangari Maathai tells its story: why it started, how it operates, and where it is going. She includes the philosophy behind it, its challenges and objectives, and the specific steps involved in starting a similar grassroots environmental and social justice organization. The Green Belt Movement is the inspiring story of people working at the grassroots level to improve their environment and their country. Their story offers ideas about a new and hopeful future for Africa and the rest of the world.…
