Much of the war was fought in the east but the vastness of the continent meant that both sides held territory far to the West, separated from their principal forces and seats of government by the American wilderness. In 1862 a force of Union volunteers marched some 900 miles from California to take the war to the Confederacy in New Mexico and western Texas. At the time it was the longest march ever attempted through desert by the U.S Army. Inevitably this incursion into the wild lands of the frontier brought the force into contact and collision with another enemy-the fierce warriors of the Indians of the south western plains. The author of this book was a serving officer of the California Column and he left three separate pieces about his experiences, which have been gathered together in this single volume special Leonaur edition. Of special note is the detailed account of the action now known as the First Battle of Adobe Walls. Near the site of the epic siege by buffalo hunters against Quanah Parker after the war, California Column troops under the command of the legendary Kit Carson held off a vastly numerically superior force of Comanches and Kiowas. Pettis was in command of the units howitzers and it is considered that his actions and the influence of artillery probably saved the Union force from annihilation. M 9th Lancers, to his wife who was residing at Kussowlee in the Himalayan foothills near Shimla. Anson was an experienced officer at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny, with some t…wenty years service in the sub-continent, having fought at Punniar in the Gwalior War of 1843, at Sobraon, 1846, during the First Sikh War and Gujerat and Chillianwallah, 1849 and during the Second Sikh War. At the outbreak of the mutiny he was in command of a squadron of the 9th. His regiment, the 9th Queens Royal Lancers, had received their first posting to India in time to take part in the Gwalior War and during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 they served at the storm of Delhi and the capture and relief of Lucknow. The popular view is that they were awarded their famous nickname, 'the Delhi Spearmen' by the mutineers themselves. It is certain that the regiment deservedly earned its fierce reputation. It was highly regarded by others in the campaign and members of the regiment were awarded an astonishing twelve Victoria Crosses for acts of outstanding courage-more than awarded to any other cavalry regiment. Anson's intimate letters to his family were, of course, never originally intended to be published, but fortunately for posterity they have left us with a nonpareil record of the mutiny as a cavalry officer and mounted regiment experienced it, details of the every day life of a regiment of the Victorian era on campaign and a first hand reaction to the events of the Mutiny from someone who related-not with the benefit of reflection, but with the immediacy of reportage-events as they occurred. Two thirds of the those who volunteered…for the 9th were men from South Australia-the remainder were from Victoria. The regiment was shipped to Egypt in early 1915 to take part in the campaigns against Germany's ally in the Middle East, the Ottoman Turkish Army. It was considered that mounted infantry were ideally suited for a mobile war, but (as part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade) the 9th was selected to serve unmounted at Gallipoli as a consequence of high casualties suffered by the allies in the Dardanelles campaign. The regiment was in reserve during the battle of the Nek so suffered less severely. They suffered significantly, however, during the attack on Hill 60. Upon the regiment's return to Egypt following evacuation, the 9th took part in the defence of the Suez Canal and led the way in the Jifafa Raid. As the Ottomans fell back to the north the regiment took part in one its fiercest engagements at Magdhaba in December, 1916 and it is this event that is recorded in the second piece in this volume as described by Sir archibald Murray.Following the unsuccessful battles before Gaza the regiment served in the Trans-Jordan Raid, at Jenin and at Sa'sa. It entered Damascus in October 1918.This regiment concluded its war performing security services following civil unrest in Egypt after the conclusion of hostilities. Notably, under the leadership of Sultan Suleiman ' The Magnificent', the Turks were engaged in near-constant warfare on both land and sea. In 1522 the Knights of St. John were expelled from their stronghold on Rhodes. The Sultan's army then swept into continental Europe, assaulting Hungary and the empire of Habsburgs. The Battle of Mohacs, was a decisive Ottoman victory that led to the collapse of Hungary and heralded a long occupation. The Ottomans then besieged Vienna in 1529. Here they were repelled, the action marking the high watermark of their expansion to the west. Control of the Mediterranean, however remained an essential objective for Ottoman expansion and their ships became the terror of the seas, raiding and taking thousands of prisoners into slavery. The Great Siege of Malta, failed to secure the central sea and in the Battle of Lepanto, the Christian allies' fleet destroyed the Ottoman navy. By the end of the 1500s, the Ottoman Empire's rapid, unchecked territorial expansion into Europe had largely become a strategic stalemate.
