I and III front inner hinge broken; front free endpaper loose in vol. I. All volumes have top and bottom of spine split with some loss. Small piece missing mid-spine of vol. III. Pencil marks on two portraits in vol. I, not affecting the image. Ink presentation inscription to former owner dated 1913 in each volume, either on half-title or recto of frontispiece. Judging by the ad in back the price was probably 6s. Juvenile hardback. A companion volume to his "Old-Fashioned Tales" (1905). Twenty stories from early writers for children 1830 to 1890, intended to be representative. Lady Anne, the longest story in the book, is a lovely riches to rags to riches tale that shows the lives of the poor in the early 19th c. Technic: Lithography; colorit: original colored; condition: little stains, size (in cm): 24,5 x 33 cm; - View shows the ancient Egyptian temple at Gebel Garaba in Egypt. Before Roberts became famous for his pictures of Egypt and the Holy Land, he made a similarly long excursion to Spain in 1832/33 and returned with more than 200 sketches of Spanish monuments and places. These were used to produce lithographs that were published in four volumes of the Landscape Annual in 1835-38 and in a separate work, Picturesque Sketches in Spain, published in London in 1837 by Hodgson and Graves.; - Special feature: From "Roberts' Sketshes.
