Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. The consistently original painter, sculptor and video artist Mark Wallinger has created some of the most subtly intelligent and irreverent work from the UK in the last twenty-five years. Studying in London at the Chelsea School of Art (1978 - 81) and Goldsmiths College (1983 - 5), his early work questioned the traditions and values of British society and its class system, best represented by his employment of images of racehorses. Painted in a photo-realist style, these works explored issues of ownership, inheritance and pedigree, with suggestive titles such as Race, Class, Sex (1993). His 1995 Turner Prize nomination was largely thanks to his piece A Real Work Of Art, an actual racehorse which Wallinger had bought and named 'A Real Work Of Art' with a view to entering it in races, causing his artistic concept to be piped into bookmakers up and down the country. In the late 1990s Wallinger shifted his focus to a questioning of institutionalised spirituality and religion. Typical of his humourous observational approach, his piece Angel (1997) is a video played in reverse showing the artist as his blind alterego 'Blind Faith' walking backwards at the bottom of an escalator at Angel Underground Station while reciting the opening lines of the Gospel of John in the King James Bible. His innate scepticism was downplayed in a later popular public sculpture commissioned for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, Ecce Homo (1999), a serene marble life-sized cast of a young man representing Christ. After a retrospective at Tate Liverpool in 2000, representing Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2001, and then winning the Turner Prize in 2007 with his socially engaged installation State Britain, Wallinger's star has continued to ascend, culminating in Ebbsfleet Landmark Project - a fifty metre sculpture of a white horse standing in the English countryside. 2013 has also seen him create a multipart work entitled Labyrinth to mark the 150th anniversary of London Underground. As with all the titles in our perennial Modern Artists series, this book contains one hundred full-colour illustrations and a new interview with the artist. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. One of a series introducing major movements in modern art to general readers, students and gallery visitors, this text looks at the Post-Impressionists. Hard on the heels of the Impressionists came artists with a different agenda. Dissatisfied with the essentially short-term effects Impressionism had mastered, they strove in their different ways for an art of a more permanent, structured and expressive kind. By refining and codifying, or dismantling and reassembling, the procedures of Impressionism, artists such as Seurat, Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh and their associates rewrote the rules for representational painting at the turn of the 20th century. The arbitrary colour, exaggerated forms and abstraction of their works marked a new distance between artist and nature, and prepared the public for the freedoms of the next generation of innovators. This book focuses on the artists responsible for these influential stylistic changes, and sets them in their intellectual and historical contexts. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Many people have difficulty in appreciating Carl Andre's "Equivalent VIII", consisting of 120 bricks, as a work of art. This publication shows not only how "the bricks" are indeed sculpture, but that minimalist works such as this present some of the most interesting and imaginative work of the 1960s. Minimalism emerged and developed as a reaction against the emotiveness of abstract expressionism. Although most of the artists involved did not regard themselves as part of a group, there are certain key factors which define minimalist work: it is abstract, three-dimensional, modular, serial, geometric, preconceived in design and industrial in execution. This introduction examines the implications of these characteristics, looking in particular at the work of key artists: Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt. It also focuses on the different emphases in each artist's work. The book also looks at the varied types of criticism and interpretation to which minimalism has been subject over the years. It ends by discussing how minimalism, which has influenced almost every subsequent art movement, has continuing relevance for artists today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Realism in the art of the 20th century is striking for its diversity. Although not bound together stylistically or by a "manifesto" of intention, a common thread in realist art is a commitment to the modern world and to things as they appear, whether it be the domestic claustrophobia depicted in Sickert's "Ennui" or the social observation of urban nightlife in Weimar Germany in the work of Christian Shad and Georg Schrimpf. The author examines the so-called "socialist reform" of Stalin's Soviet Union and the condemnation of artists and works not conforming to the academic-realist scruples of Adolf Hitler. With the triumph of abstract expressionism in the 1950s, realism may have been thought outmoded, but its varied and vibrant quality was to be revealed in the "Pop Art" backlash in the United States and Britain, in the work of David Hockney, Richard Hamilton and Andy Warhol. The development of photography in both war and peacetime is also discussed. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. This short book introduces the reader to the key concepts in art from ancient times to the present day. Unlike many previous publications, in which non-Western art is a mere add-on to the great artists and movements of the Western canon, this tells the story of art from a fresh perspective, integrating previously marginalised aspects of artistic creation into the principal narrative. The text focuses on illustrated examples, ranging from the iconic to the unusual, providing a stimulating and throught-provoking introduction to a complex and challenging subject. Concise and informative, the book is written in a clear, jargonfree style. While it is ideal for first-year students of art, art history and related subjects, it will also be invaluable for general readers wanting to know and understand more about art and culture. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. This illustrated work provides an account of the evolving personal relationship between Matisse and Picasso, and in doing so it challenges the popular notion of intense rivalry between the two artists. The two first met in 1906 when Matisse had achieved recognition for his innovative Fauvist works and Picasso was poised to challenge for the leadership of the avant-garde. Though the pair were never intimate friends they maintained contact for the last twenty years of Matisse's life and their artistic relationship can be addressed through an analysis of a key group of their works. This volume discusses themes of the primitive, prompting differing responses in their art, and their common dependence on the Western figurative tradition. It goes on to explore their parallel development as leading sculptors and their unceasing invention in the field of collage. It further views the impact of their differing working methods, Matisse's reaction to Cubism and Picasso's preoccupation with brilliant colour and decorative pattern. He was a printmaker and sculptor, but is best known as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the arts in the opening decades of the twentieth century. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, has won him recognition as a leading figure in the development of modern art. "My First Nursery Book" tells the stories "Who Killed Cock Robin?", "The Gingerbread Man", "Three Little Pigs" and "The Three Bears" with uniquely beautiful period illustrations that look as fresh and vital today as they did six decades ago. A true masterpiece of book design and illustration, the book was first published in 1947 and has been unavailable for over sixty years. Themerson was a Polish avant-garde artist and filmmaker who turned to children's book illustration as a refugee in London in the 1940s, discovering a talent that is unique in the field. As the critic Jasia Reichardt explains in an accompanying note on the artist, she never patronises her audience, but 'treats her readers as partners in the discovery of the.minutiae of life. And this clarity is matched by the wit, charm and originality of the design and illustrations.'Lovingly republished from the original proofs to its original specification, this classic children's book is now made available to a new generation, so that children once again can discover just how beautiful the best storybooks can be. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. "A Bigger Splash" will take a new look at the dynamic relationship between performance and painting from 1950 to the present day. Taking its title from David Hockney's iconic 1967 image of a Californian swimming pool and Jack Hazan's docu-fiction film about Hockney's life, it will bring together a range of key works by artists including Yves Klein, Jackson Pollock, Cindy Sherman and Karen Kilimnik. Moving through half a century of work in painting, video and photography, and including archival and documentary material, this book will show how performance art has challenged and energised the medium of painting for successive generations. The book will contain three essays: the evolution of contemporary practice via a key period of experiment in the 1960s-70s; a consideration of the issue of pictorial space in painting with reference to history; and an examination of how the theoretical concept of 'performativity' relates to the issues played out within that high period of 'performance art'. By offering readers new ways of looking at some familiar works in Tate's Collection, and yet also bringing to light recent and new works that experiment with performance and painting in a variety of ways, this promises to be one the most authorative and dynamic studies of the subject yet published. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Constable is one of the best-known and most popular of British painters. His fresh depictions of the English countryside have often been taken as the genuine and most authentic record of his native land. Yet there is far more to Constable than the celebration of local scenery. Tracing the Pre-Raphaelite movement through its chronological development rather than by artist, this volume concentrates on the vital years from 1848 (when the Brotherhood was formed) to 1860, but also includes a substantial group of works from the following 20 years - a period during which the movement took new directions. The full range of Pre-Raphaelite painting is represented, from the hard-edged style of Millais's early work to the sensuousness of Rossetti's and Burne-Jones's painting in the 1870s. Altogether 250 works from collections all over the world are illustrated and discussed by scholars such as Mary Bennett, Judith Bronkhurst, John Christian, Alastair Grieve, Benedict Read and Malcolm Warner. In his introduction, Sir Alan Bowness surveys the development of Pre-Raphaelitism and examines to what extent it was ever a shared style. The chronological arrangement of the book is designed to focus on the same question and to suggest the numerous cross-currents of the movement. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
