Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, 191 pp. From the blurb: "When Brooke Crutchley joined the Cambridge University Press as Walter Lewis's assistant in 1930, he found himself in the midst of the typographical revival which had begun towards the end of the nineteenth century and which gathered fresh impetus in the 1920s. His close association with Lewis, and with Stanley Morison, Oliver Simon, Francis Meynell, Eric Gill, Bruce Rogers and others, enables him to write authentically - and entertainingly - about their working methods and their personalities. Artists come into his story too, among them Gwen Raverat, Reynolds Stone and Edward Ardizzone. After the war, during which he served in the Admiralty, Brooke Crutchley succeeded Lewis as University Printer and in the following years he was absorbed in a search for increased productivity, the building of a new printing house, introducing up-to-date technologies and sparring with printing trade unions. Frequently throughout the book he expresses his ideas on the principles of good typography and he tells of his battles for well-designed lettering in public places. In a chapter on his visits to America he writes of the standards of book design and production as he found them there and about the American printers and publishers whom he met. It is, however, Cambridge, England, which provides most of the background and, incidentally, some engaging sketches of donnish characters of a generation now past." Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.
