He joined Western Printing & Lithographing Co. in 1916, and later was president of the Whitman Publishing Co., the book division of Western Printing. He was president of Whitman Publishing when he left to form his own publishing business, Lowe, Inc. in Kenosha in 1940. When the New York Times wanted information about best-selling children's books, it was logical to seek out Samuel E Lowe, for he was the recognized dean of the children's book business. Upon his death in 1952 his wife took over the company. Edith K. Lowe (16 Aug 1905 - 25 Feb 2000), in 1937 she was already widely known as a talented writer and editor of children's books. Her stories under the pseudonym "Mary Windsor" delighted countless parents and children.
