1/2 coarse woven cloth. One of 1500 copies, this one un-numbered but presentation copy. "The story of the Howard Greenberg Gallery, vividly chronicled by New York art writer Lyle Rexer; Greenberg's reflections on selected works from his personal collection; and a chronology of the exhibition history of the gallery, have provided an unprecedented canvas on which to merge fine book making and photographic scholarship. The centrepiece of the book is a portfolio of 25 masterful photographs drawn from Greenberg's personal collection. Each image is paired with Greenberg's thoughtful assessments and recollections. As characterized by Michael Torosian in his introduction, "The portfolio is the synthesis of erudition and passion, a connoisseur's survey, and it's also a memoir, a look back at some of the touchstones that have made up a collection, a career and a life." Twenty-five years of exhibitions are detailed in a compilation that encapsulates the history of the gallery." A great book suited to its subject, most handsomely produced by the esteemed Lumiere Press. Fine with custom [presentation bookplate.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 100 pages. Published in 2000. New And Enlarged Edition of the photographer's classic. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition Thus. Published in a small and limited print run (simultaneously with the Deluxe Edition) by Lumiere Press as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition Thus is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Dave Heath and Michael Torosian: Oversize-volume format. Pale gray cloth boards with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Dave Heath. Letter by the late great Robert Frank, who was a great admirer of the photographer's work, which appears in this edition only. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Berlin, Germany using the NovaTone process, an exceptional offset technique that preserves the photographs' brilliant tonal scale, to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Re-presents Dave Heath's "A Dialogue With Solitude". His singular masterpiece. "In 1961, Dave Heath assembled the photographs that he had been making throughout the 1950's into a poetic sequence. The original plan for the book, as he envisioned it, would be a large format, as big as LIFE Magazine was at the time. When the book was eventually published, it was considerably reduced in size. Using the maquette from 1961 and the set of master prints, the book has been restored to the format of Dave Heath's original design" (Publisher's blurb). Among the handful of great photographers, Dave Heath has been one of the least prolific, an admirable feat in itself, considering that the medium inherently encourages constant picture-taking, endless repetition, and non-stop proliferation. In addition to his "Korea" Portfolio, the photographs in this collection represent the very best of the photographer's relatively slim but unparalleled output. "Dave Heath has combined the freedom and spontaneity of the small camera approach with a rare formal intensity and precision. His pictures possess stability, simplicity, and tremendous emotional force" (Museum of Modern Art). An absolute "must-have" title for Dave Heath collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in blue pen-marker on the title page by Dave Heath. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition Thus/First Printing (Lumiere Press) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies of the 1965 First Edition available online command between $2500 and $5000. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 82 duotone plates. Dave Heath's "A Dialogue With Solitude" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Reviewing an exhibition of Dave Heath s photographs from Korea, Jacob Deschin of the New York Times, wrote, in 1958, Mr Heath is a relatively new photographer and truly a discovery. His pictures reveal compassion and understanding, penetration and a masterly use of the medium. Heath had photographed his fellow soldiers in the winter of 1953/54 the early months of a tenuous truce producing a suite of introspective portraits permeated with the malaise of war. It was a body of work that defined the young photographer as an artist. The 1958 exhibition a set of virtuoso prints remained intact, and it is from this exquisite collection that Lumiere Press has shaped our new limited-edition book. Heath's reminiscences of Korea, along with an introductory essay by Michael Torosian, amplify the stunning portfolio of twenty-six black and white photographs and one never before seen colour image. Specifications: Korea has been composed in the rare typeface Linotype Falcon, and printed letterpress on Biblio paper, a mould-made sheet. Heath's printmaking has been replicated through stochastic tritone lithography. The images have been printed on Utopia Premium paper and varnished. The book has been hand bound in Japanese Asahi bookcloth and Bugra mould-made paper, patterned in black and gold, over boards. The book measures 7 3/8 x 9 inches; 64 pages. Limited to a numbered edition of 200.
