Als kleines Mädchen habe ich mich ins Badezimmer, ohne Meeresblick, eingeschlossen und im Spiegel meine Gesichtszüge geübt, verschiedene Gefühle vorgespielt, dazu passende Gesten und Worte, ganze Dialoge sogar, ausprobiert. Während des Studiums habe ich mich dann endlich auf die richtige Bühne und vor das lebende Publikum getraut und seitdem kann ich nicht genug davon haben. Mit sechs Jahren schrieb ich mein erstes Gedicht. Es handelte von einem Apfel, der auf dem Baum ungepflückt hängen blieb, verwelkte und herunter fiel. Vier Versen. 2011, vier Jahrzehnte danach, wurde mein erster Roman "Jeden Tag, jede Stunde" veröffentlicht und gleich in mehr als 25 Länder verkauft. Er wird dabei sichtbar als dezidierter Vertreter und Verteidiger des Modells einer ästhetisch und ethisch ambitionierten und engagierten, überzeitlich relevanten Literatur: dargestellt und beurteilt und gerichtet und erträglich gemacht werde die Welt ausschließlich durch die Kunst. Kleeberg widerspricht der Tendenz [.] der eifrigen Nivellierung von Kunst unter dem Vorwand einer Schleifung vermeintlich elitärer Bastionen als hochgefährlich und kontraproduktiv. Er entwirft so für sich ein Verständnis der Literatur, die erzählerische Avanciertheit mit humanistischer Pflicht zur Erkundung der condition humaine und der Darstellung der unaussprechlichen, scheinbar hoffnungslosen Tragik menschlicher Existenz verbindet. Von der Kritik wurde u. a. hervorgehoben, es werde im Gespräch deutlich, dass Kleeberg seine Vorstellung von Literatur aus gründlichster Lektüre und Reflexion gewonne.
