Autorenporträt: David Steindl-Rast (geboren am 12. Juli 1926 in Wien) ist ein amerikanischer Benediktinermönch. David Steindl-Rast wuchs in Österreich auf. Er schloss in Wien ein Kunst- und ein Psychologiestudium ab, daneben studierte er Anthropologie. 1952 folgte er aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen seiner Familie in die USA. Bereits 1953 trat er in das kurz zuvor neu gegründete Benediktinerkloster Mount Saviour in Elmira, NY, ein. 1958/59 war er Post-Doctoral Fellow an der Cornell University, wo er als erster Katholik Raymond G. Thorpe Lectures hielt. 1965 wurde er von seinem Abt beauftragt, sich mit dem interreligiösen Dialog zwischen Christentum und Buddhismus zu befassen. Er praktizierte daraufhin Zen bei den Meistern Haku'un Yasutani, Soen Nakagawa, Shunryu Suzuki und Eido Tai Shimano. Gemeinsam mit Rabbinern, Buddhisten, Hindus und Sufis gründete Steindl-Rast 1968 das Center for Spiritual Studies, 1975 erhielt er für sein Engagement im Dialog der Religionen den Martin Buber Award. Im selben Jahr war er Mitgründer des Retreat-Centers Sky Farm in Sonoma, Kalifornien, dessen Direktorium er angehört. Er engagierte sich ab 1970 in der "House of Prayer"-Bewegung, die in den USA und Kanada rund 200.000 Anhänger hat. 1989 gründete er zusammen mit dem Zen-Mönch Vanja Palmers in Dienten am Hochkönig das "Haus der Stille" Puregg, Begegnungsstätte und Zentrum spiritueller Praxis und Besinnung, dessen Betrieb 2009 jedoch wieder eingestellt wurde. David Steindl-Rast vertritt eine pluralistische Religionstheologie, derzufolge weder das Christentum noch eine andere Religion"einzig wahre" Heilsmittler sind: Religionen entstanden in einem spezifischen kulturellen und historischen Umfeld, und jede Religion könne die gleiche Funktion erfüllen. Im Internet betreibt Steindl-Rast erfolgreich ein internationales Network for Grateful Living, dessen Mitbegründer er auch ist. In einem angeschlossenen Online-Shop können Kaffeetassen und T-Shirts mit dem Logo des Netzwerks erworben werden.
