This collection of essays examines the phenomenon of the gradually evolving cultural differences which took place between America and Britain after the American revolution. A culture of individualism began to emerge in contrast with elitism, leading to suspicion of government and emerging personal ambitions, particularly with regard to one's children. However, cultural changes emerged at a different pace in different parts of the country. One author argues that Britain and America continued as members of a single political family which, in turn, belonged to a wider European community. Another suggests that a clear but selective emancipation from the British political culture took place and that a development of distinctly American institutions and practices emerged. Yet another believes that in the United States there was less criticism of business success and less possibility of the generations that succeeded business success being seduced by gentrification. This volume weaves together Rousseau's writings on anthropology and its relationship to thinking about the enlightenment in our time. Rousseau approaches the subject as an eclectic discourse and invokes an interdisciplinary method grounded in the cross-fertilization of modern academic disciplines. He also traces the evolution of his own thinking about anthropology in the enlightenment topics from the revolutionary decade of the 1960s to the present time, and suggests how social and political developments have influenced these constructed modern discourses. He aims to show that the poststructuralist habit of mind has virtually wiped away older forms of learning, and replaced them with a discourse of its own whose sense of realism and referentiality is problematic. Together with its companion volumes, "Perilous Enlightenment" and "Enlightenment Borders, this interdisciplinary work may be of use to students of enlightenment, 18th-century studies, social history, history of ideas and science and literature. Inscription on endpaper, VG bright tight copy in publishers cloth in like dustjacket. The "enlightenment" is as much an accumulation of modern discourses as a real historical phenomenon, and needs to be revaluated in relation to the empirical academic disciplines in which modern practitioners work. This book suggests that the 20th-century transition from prestructuralism to poststructuralism, must be taken into account if we hope to understand how these enlightenment discourses have been constructed in our time. Rousseau's views are grounded in the socio-political confusions of his own time. His agenda undertakes to demonstrate that in the 20th century we have invented a European enlightenment according to our own complex relation to structuralism and modernism. The differences and overlaps of the two movements, the tension and ambivalences they inevitably evoke are adumbrated as the author traces his own relation to these currents of thought for over a quarter of a century. Together with its companion volume, "Enlightenment Crossings", this interdisciplinary work will be of interest to students of enlightenment whatever their discipline. ISBN 0719033012.
