Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The Nobel Prize, according to the will of its founder Alfred Nobel, are awarded to persons for their services in the field of chemistry, physics, medicine and physiology, literature and peace. The Economic Sciences Prize was introduced by the Swedish Bank and first awarded in 1969. Till 1964, fourteen Indians Aga Khan III, Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh, Hari Mohan Banerjee, Sanjib Kumar Chaudhuri, Benegal Narsing Rau, Rajah Bhushanman Manikam, Mahesh Prasad Varma alias His Holiness Bal Brahmachari, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Mehar Chand Davar, Sri Aurobindo Ghose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Mahatma Gandhi were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. An apostle of non-violent struggle and a crusader against colonialism and inequality Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi) was a much revered world figure. Between 1924 and 1948, in nearly 100 nominations (individual or joint) he was proposed for the Nobel Peace Prize. And yet despite international support, Gandhi was never a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Why was it so, was it the fault of the Nobel Committee. Perhaps his associates made mistakes. In order to answer such questions, the nomination letters, newspaper cuttings, reports of the experts of the Nobel Committee, confidential record of the Committee and other unpublished documents were consulted from the Archives of the Peace Prize Institute. The results are discussed and analysed in this volume.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. This is a new edition of Dr. Webster's The Nirankari Sikhs (1979), which has been recognized as the single most important work on the history of Baba Dayal and his successors . It updates the earlier edition not only by dealing with the past forty years of Nirankari history but also by taking into account subsequent scholarship on the history of Sikhism, especially during the first half of the nineteenth century. Further it also provides two additional primary sources of nineteenth century Nirankari history along with the nine included in the earlier edition. This new edition will be of value not only to those scholars interested in Nirankari history but also to those seeking a fuller understanding of the evolution of Sikh identity since the nineteenth century. Sikh identity has been a major issue for Nirankaris in recent decades because they have been confused with the Sant Nirankari Mandal which makes no claims to a Sikh identity. Nirankaris, like other Sikhs, base their beliefs and practices upon the Guru Granth Sahib and revere the ten Sikh gurus. For this reason they view themselves and are considered by other Sikhs, to be minority group within Sikhism. They are distinguished from other Sikhs, most obviously in not fully embracing the Khalsa tradition of the Sikhs and in having a continuing hereditary line of human gurus. How such similarities and differences have affected their own and the very nature of, Sikh identity over the past two centuries is an important part of this history.

Hardcover. Condition: New. The Gadayuddham (The Duel of the Maces) is a kavya composed in classical Kannada literary style at the turn of the eleventh century CE. It is written in campu, a genre that developed in the tenth century as a mixture of poetry and prose. Ranna s poem is remarkably dramatic in nature and is a meditation on the cost of war. Crisp dialogue, body gestures and imagery fill the poem. It is as if the poet were giving us directions for a play. Ranna employs flashbacks , a technique called simhavalokana, that is, a lion turning casually to glance behind him. Ranna builds up to the duel through characters recalling episodes of injury or through lamentation. The duel occupies only a short space in the eighth canto, but Ranna takes this time to fill in past episodes and reflect on the impact of war. This thousand-year-old poem will interest scholars as well as lay readers.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Although there has been, in recent times, a widespread interest in preservation and promotion of Indigenous heritage or knowledge systems from a variety of disciplines and sectors from across the globe, the design principles or modalities of a holistic conservation remains largely unexplored. This book hopes to fill up this lacunae and proposes the concept of Ecosemiotic Community Museuology (ECM), and a road map for it, through theory and practice. Based on the trajectories of conservation natural, cultural and museological down time, and indigenous epistemological premises brought forth from previous research, the book proposes the concept of ECM as a paradigm for successful community-based conservation of indigenous knowledge systems or indigenous biocultural heritage in its holistic wholeness. While taking into cognizance the issues of interfacing namely, cross-cultural knowledge integration, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), the volume attempts to add value to its basic ecosemiotic museological proposition, and strengthen its case through presentation of, and comments on a diverse range of secondary case studies of ongoing conservational initiatives from across the globe that highlight the ingredients of success as well as non-performance of such efforts. The ultimate goal of the historical surveys, intellectual exercises and the case studies in this volume are to capture the nuances that can help decolonize not just museology or conservation but development and sustainability itself and, hopefully, help make advances towards a decentralized museological governance for the invaluable indigenous bio-cultural heritage that still lies strewn across the globe in various stages of decimation.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Deliberative democracy can be seen as a part of the agenda of deepening democracy, wherein the public deliberation of citizens forms the basis of legitimate decision-making, with the people participating directly in the deliberations or making of decisions that affect them. Although political theorists have long contended that democracy should not be based merely on voting but also on informed public debate and despite diverse attempts at deliberative democracy having been made in various parts of the world, it is only during the recent decades that such initiatives have gained momentum. In terms of procedural democracy and the working of democratic institutions, India s record is considered to be noteworthy. However, questions relating to deliberative democracy have come to the fore, particularly in the recent years, with questions of inclusion and equality posing major challenges. The essays in this volume address various dimensions of the issue, ranging from a theoretical conceptualization of deliberative democracy to its role in constitution-making, Gandhian contributions to deliberative democracy, civil society interventions and the role of the media in deliberative processes in India, the participation of new social movements, Dalit and ecological movements, as well as the intricacies of deliberation and decentralization and issues of development, marginalization and mobilization. The volume facilitates an understanding of the broad contours and evolving nature of democracy in India and how the Indian experience can inform larger debates on deliberative democracy.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. The volume deals with the inter-relations between agricultural production, agrarian trade, markets, towns and population of urban Rajasthan in the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries. The factors for the growth of the agrarian markets are discussed in the light of the archival sources like arhsattas, toji-do-varkhi-baje-talke, sava bahis and khas-rukka-parwana bahis, of Amber (Jaipur), Hadauti (Kota), Bikaner and Marwar (Jodhpur) respectively. For this work since direct data on population count before 1881 is elusive the author has used house-count as well as different kinds of taxes (kholari, jhumpari and dhuan) while calculating the population of different urban centers. The question that how some of these markets gradually earned the status of towns is shown through available evidence. This study also displays that how the higher receipts from sair-jihat (non-agrarian taxes) in various areas of Rajasthan, worked in the evolution of agrarian markets into qasbas. The book uses various methods for working out the urban population of the pre-census period, the comparison with that of the census-count and calculates decline in it. On the same line the volume shows the fall in industrial activity in the late nineteenth century which broadly corresponds with the theory of de-industrialization and de-urbanization. This volume is essential reading for scholars of Agrarian History of Rajasthan in the colonial period.
