Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Issued Without Jacket. First Edition Thus. McSweeney's Quarterly Concern is a San Francisco-based literary magazine publishing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, comics and other interesting material. Founded in 1998, it is considered one of America's leading literary periodicals with work by well-known authors as well as still-to-be-recognized artists. Each issue is designed individually; there have been hardcovers and softcovers, an issue with a magnetic binding, one containing nothing but comics, another looking like a pile of junk mail. So 39 is a First Printing, First Edition Thus. About 6 x 8 inches, 283 pages (2 full-page ads at back) in pictorial paper-covered boards. Front cover shows photo illustration of person running in a hilly landscape above a body of water. Photo is by Tabitha Soren, who has a series of "Running" photos of people at speed in various dress and locales in two sets of inserts within the issue. Two of the more unlikely contributors are Vaclav Havel, playwright and former president of both Czechoslavakia and the Czech Republic (a quote from his work fills the back cover.) and crime fiction writer Elmore Leonard. Thirty-nine's boards and text are clean, complete and unmarked, no noticeable edge or surface wear, no tearing or bumping. A collectable copy of this issue of an always interesting and innovative publication.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good to Near Fine. First Edition. McSweeney's Quarterly Concern is a San Francisco-based literary magazine publishing contemporary fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, comics and other interesting literary material. Founded in 1988, it is considered one of America's leading literary periodicals with work by well-known authors as well as by still-to-be-recognized artists. Each issue is designed individually; there have been hard covers and soft covers; an issue with magnetic binding; one containing nothing but comics and another that looked like junk mail. This issue, "Thirty-Seven," is hard cover with the upper left and lower right corners of the covers and text block "clipped" to create a six-sided, six-cornered shape that works as part of the geometic design of the cover and interior paintings by Jonathan Runcio. Also, the spine of the book is about a quarter-inch wider than the text block to accomodate the 5 5/8 x 7 1/2 inch, 64-page paperback, "Yukon adventure," excerpted from John Sayle's novel, "A Moment in the Sun," which is enclosed in an open-ended envelope attached to the inside front cover. "Thirty-seven" is a first printing, first edition thus. About 8 1/8 x 10 1/4 inches on its widest/longest sides; 252 pages in multi-colored boards with white lettering, blue end pages and a 4-inch wide heavy paper banner wrapped vertically around the back cover, which lists the issue's contributors including novelists Jonathan Franzen and Joyce Carol Oates as well as Sophia Cara Frydman and Henry James, the artists who provided the marginal illustrations. Boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked, no tears, no bumping or creasing. No more than a touch of edge and surface wear. A collectable copy.
