Book
Cloth, 8vo, 20 cm, 386 pp, ills. From the blurb: "Edmund Wilson has an old family house in Talcottville, a tiny community northwest of Utica in upstate New York. The house - made from the local limestone - was built by Hezekiah Talcott at the end of the eighteenth century. In the middle of the last century Sophronia Talcott married a Thomas Baker, and when she died and left the property to her husband instead of to the Talcotts, a family feud was set off that lasted for years. All of these people are Wilson's forebears on his mother's side, and since his mother's death he has spent a good deal of time there. The opening chapters of Upstate describe the development of this section of northern New York - mainly Lewis and Oneida counties - and the people and the countryside that Wilson is so fond of: " - a country of very high skies with white clouds that reduced the proportions of everything else, even the rising hills of orange sunsets and menacing thunderstorms; a place that was strange and liberating, yet a place where one was perfectly at home. I felt, after many years of almost total absence, that I was visiting a foreign country but a country to which I belonged."Upstate is not, however, mainly a regional history: it is a diary-notebook. Most of Upstate consists of selections, with occasional interpolations, covering the period 1950-1970, and the chapters are filled with accounts of people who live in that part of the world, and Wilson's family and friends. This account of the changes in New York State life since Wilson's childhood and during the last twenty years, though occurring in a relatively stable society, reflects recent developments which are fundamental and national in scope: the bringing down of a once thriving rural community into something more anarchic but at the same time more democratic." Very Good in slightly used and agetoned dustwrapper.
