Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 36.5 by 26.5cm., 240pp. fully illustrated in colour and line drawings, section on documentary inscriptions. This is a lavishly illustrated presentation of the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art's collection of arms and armor. The items range in date from the seventh to the nineteenth centuries A.D. In avoiding the strictly typological classification of most previous catalogues of the subject, the aim is to give a full sense of the panoply of warfare: the stirrup, the drum, and the talismanic shirt were as important to the Muslim warrior as the sword and the mail shirt. David Alexander, the leading authority on Islamic arms and armor, has provided a detailed scholarly guide to this outstanding collection. With slipcase.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 2 Vols., 36 by 26.5cm., 439 pp., fully illustrated in colour, blue slip-case (wear and fading). This two-part work, vol. XII from The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, contains a large and important group of objects and manuscripts that may be broadly categorised as scientific instruments, tools or magical implements. Many objects of this kind have never before been systematically catalogued, and this volume brings together much information previously scattered to present a corpus of material for future comparative study. The astronomical instruments are those primarily connected with the fundamental concerns of Islamic astronomy determining the times of prayer and the direction of Mecca and the teaching and practice of cosmology and astrology. The Collection includes important individual pieces, among them a fine celestial globe made in 1285 6 and a unique Judeo-Arabic astrolabe of c. 1300. Another 218 entries include medical manuscripts, magic bowls, amulets and other magical or geomantic devices that reflect different aspects of medieval Islamic medical care, while a group of mortars, a selection from the large collection of locks, and miscellaneous tools such as scissors, scales and weights, complete this survey of objects which embody the varied preoccupations of Islamic culture. The information presented includes a ground-breaking study of leather workers in medieval Iran. Bottom edge of both volumes each with four felt tip remainder marks (please see images).

Contents: Accounts: catalogue numbers 1-24 Letters: catalogue numbers 25-96 Legal Documents: catalogue numbers 97-108 Black and white plates: catalogue numbers 109-258 Notes: English and Arabic. Summary:This volume of the Khalili Collection catalogues approximately 250 Arabic documents written on papyrus. Each accompanied by a plate, the entries are catalogued according to the type of document, firstly accounts, secondly legal documents, and thirdly, letters. Most of the documents date from the eighth or ninth centuries A.D. A large number of the papyri came from Fustat, the old Arab capital of Egypt. Nearly all published Arabic papyri came from southern Egypt. The Khalili collection contains the first Arabic document that has been discovered to have been written in northern Iraq. The documents are an important primary source for socio-economic history, palaeography, and diplomatics. The text is supported by notes, up-to-date bibliography, and index.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 36 by 26 cm. 256 pages fully illustrated in colour. This is the third of four volumes cataloguing the Qur anic material in the Collection; it covers the period from 1400 to 1600 and presents 60 items from Iran, Central Asia, Syria, Egypt, Turkey and India. Most notable among them is a Qur an that was kept in the women s quarters of the Mughal imperial residence in the 17th and 18th centuries. This exquisite manuscript may have been produced for Shah Tahmasp, the greatest patron of the arts of the book in 16th-century Iran. Besides detailed catalogue descriptions, colour illustrations and a section on documentation where colophons are reproduced with translations, the volume contains substantial new studies. These cover the monumental Qur an previously associated with the Timurid prince Baysunghur ibn Shahrukh; Ruzbihan Muhammad, the most eminent calligrapher and illuminator of Shiraz in the early 16th century; and the great Ottoman calligrapher Ahmed Karahisari. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 36.5 by 26.5cm., 126pp. plus full colour facsimile of the jami al-tawarikh. The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art includes a fragmentary copy in Arabic of the Jami al-Tawarikh or Universal History, one of the greatest illustrated medieval manuscripts to have survived from either East or West. Written by the historian and vizier to the Ilkhanid court, Rashid al-Din, and copied in Tabriz between 1310 and 1315 by the author's own calligraphers and illustrators, the manuscript's importance as the first world history was quickly recognized. Sheila Blair reconstructs the often complex history of its ownership, explains its seminal role in the evolution of the illustrated Persian book, and challenges the belief of previous scholars that the Nour fragment and that in the Library of the University of Edinburgh are parts of different manuscripts. Her study of the manuscript's text and miniatures - accompanied by numerous colour details and duotone illustrations of comparative material - provides fascinating insights into the state of pre-Mongol painting and the working practices of a Persian atelier over six hundred years ago. With slipcase.
