It is in this spirit then that, after publishing ten works that are largely translations of Buddhist texts, I present here a personalized account of central Buddhist practices.' Hopkins has the ability to clarify complicated ideas, to bring them to life, and this he does admirably here. He cuts through the theories of Buddhism and brings them vividly into the realm of experience. He explains emptiness, the function of the guru, meditation, the cherishing of others and the Bodhisattva ideal. He unravels the complex differences between the Hinayana and Mahayana, and between the various schools of thought within the Mahayana. He reconciles conventional and ultimate reality; shows how the mind is addicted to the lies that the senses tell it, and describes the process of cutting through this craziness called cyclic existence. Enlightenment is demystified and shown to be a possibility for each individual. The entire Buddhist path is laid out as a living experience all in the context of the final path being the tantric one: the most skilful and expedient way of utilizing one's experiences to penetrate through to the nature of reality and to cut, once and for all, the very root of one's suffering. Anyone wanting to understand the Mahayana Buddhist path couldn't wish for a better book." Cover: Painting of Vajrasattva by Robert Beer.
