Hardcover first edition - First printing. A useful resource, both optimistic and pragmatic, in which Powell, a psychologist at Harvard University Health Services, "constructs a framework 'zones of concern' of four descriptive categories of teenage behavior. Case studies presented are those representative of both temporary developmental difficulties, which fall within the range of 'normal,' and those that presage deep psychic disturbance. Powell advises parents to rely on common sense, to "be there" for their children (even when their offspring are beyond the teens)" (Publisher's Weekly). Hardcover first edition - First US printing. The author's second novel, winner of the Somerset Maugham award. "The concept of a life crisis, of the road not taken, has become a commonplace in fiction and pop psychology, but it has never before been used as Rogers uses it here. Eighteen-year-old Carolyn, a British schoolgirl, is critically injured in an auto accident. While healing, she imagines how her life would have continued had she not had the accident. This other life, of Carolyn as a wife and mother, continues separately from the life of Caro, the damaged girl who recovers and pursues her own career. Eventually the two lives intersect, with neither woman realizing the other's identity. If one can accept the concept of two real Carolyns, the reward is a wealth of insight into the psychology behind the choice between career and homemaker faced by so many women. Delicately written and highly recommended." (Library Journal) Fine in fine dust jacket.

Each hexagram and each line have a symbolic meaning that the text is there to describe. The question is, why does a hexagram or line mean what the text says it does? Traditional explanations often seem forced. This translation presents new explanations based on simpler and more coherent patterns of symbolism. While they do not explain everything, they make up a framework within which the inner logic of the hexagrams becomes apparent. . . . Hopefully, this is a version that will bring the modern Western reader closer to the original Changes than he or she has yet been able to go. The Chinese I Ching~or Book of Changes~is one of the oldest books in existence, written almost three thousand years ago during China's Bronze Age. Its traditional interpretation, however, was not laid down until several centuries later. By then, not only had the I Ching's archaic language and style become difficult to understand, but Chinese theorists had also grown much more sophisticated. As a result, the great commentators interpreted the text in terms of their own ways of thought, transforming it from a simple divination handbook into the philosophical work of moral and metaphysical truths that we know today. Now, after years of study and research, Greg Whincup has uncovered the original Book of Changes and here presents the first contemporary translation to incorporate the findings of modern scholarship in China and the West. Fascinatingly, what Whincup has found in exploring the Changes' sixty~four hexagrams is not an abstruse meditation, but a very pragmatic work. It tells the story of the rise to power of a feudal lord and is an instructional manual to guide ambitious noblemen in dealing with concrete situations in their lives. Thus, we discover that the I Ching is less abstruse and much more straightforward than we have ever understood it to be. In addition to his line~by~line analysis of the hexagrams, Whincup also provides a brief history of early China and the Book of Changes itself, special sections on ancient Chinese divination and on Chinese pronunciation, and an extensive bibliography. An important and invaluable volume, REDISCOVERING THE I CHING at last clears away the traditional misinterpretations and renders this ancient Chinese oracle more accessible to every modern reader.
