Paperback. Condition: Very Good Minus. Michael Cotten and Prairie Prince (illustrator). A Very Good Plus copy, unused and never in circulation. The only demerits to its condition are a bump to the lower fore corner, which affects the front wrapper as well as the first few pages. Additionally, a manufacturing error has left a few leaves of the latter two signatures riddled with holes, an apparent issue with the paper and not damage after the fact. Each signature is printed on a different color paper. Monochromatic illustrations by Michael Cotten and Prairie Prince throughout. x + 142 pages. 5" x 8". Ahmed Yacoubi (19281985) was a Moroccan-born surrealist and abstract painter who became deeply embedded in the artsy and beat milieu in the 1950s. Yacoubi was a skilled cook, as well, and often held dinner parties for his circle of friends and patrons, which led to this 1972 self-published cookbook. As we wrote for Kitchen Arts and Letters' listing, "The cultural climate of the early '70s is well-represented in this striking and unusual book. Overlapping interests in mysticism, psychedelia, and counterculture are rife. Each signature of the book is printed on different color paper, adding to the trippy vibe. "The dishes are simple and lack headnotes, so it is with careful reading that we spot odd dashes of character as in the note to 'Use your imagination on measures. With freedom we can share.' Or such unusual ingredients as two drops of blood from a pricked right forefinger. "Some recipe names will have you curious to know more: 'how to be gentle with your brains' or 'what's left of green.' Others leave little room for misinterpretation: 'eggplant in general' or 'onions dinner.' Though the most often cited recipes are the first and last: soup to cure jealousy and hashish harairaa stew of chickpeas, vegetables, vermicelli, egg, and, of course, hashish. "Quirky and probably quite different from what you've seen before." This copy was acquired from the author's longtime romantic and collaborative partner, Carol Cannon, who discovered a stash of books among his stored artworks. It has never been in circulation. .
