No ownership marks.352 pages clean and tight. THE ANGLER'S COMPANION is a treasury of the finest fishing writing of all time. It contains a rich and entertaining variety of angling stories, anecdotes, poems and articles by an impressive array of the world's great writers. Here is the lore and tradition; the skill and passion; the anticipation and joy; the humor and pathos of the world of angling. It is not surprising that so diverse a sport has inspired such an abundance of literature. There are famous fishing stories such as R. D. Blackmore's "Crocker's Hole," which have become classics of the genre. There are humorous tales from Rudyard Kipling and Henry van Dyke. There is a wealth of lore and tradition from such great anglers as Izaak Walton and H. D. Thoreau. And there are the works of the literary giants through the ages: Theocritus, Washington Irving, Sir Walter Scott, John Keats, Robert Louis Stevenson, Guy de Maupassant, Anton Chekhov, Ernest Hemingway and many more. Few pastimes can compete with the lure of fishing, but as small compensation for the resting angler, what could be better than to read about fishing. These writers have recreated the pastoral beauty and solitude which often accompanies the sport. Their tales also contain useful hints from the masters and no angler can resist reading about the mishaps and disasters experienced by even the most accomplished. THE ANGLER'S COMPANION is an essential addition to the tackle box to be enjoyed in small portions between' catches or contemplated at length between fishing trips. Here is a true and stimulating companion for anyone who fishes. Size: 8vo.

Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 144 pp, 12 plates (4 folding), ills (some colour). From the blurb - "Oxford, one of the greatest and oldest centres of learning in the Western world, is universally known for its architectural splendour. But there is much more to Oxford, and to the University of Oxford, than the magnificence of its buildings. Through the centuries it has collected the most diverse, artistic, historical, scientific and ornamental riches. David Piper presents us with a guided tour and introduction to these riches. Profusely and colourfully illustrated, The Treasures of Oxford tells the story of these collections, describing some of their most valuable possessions. The many departments of the Ashmolean Museum are presented in detail - Antiquities, Western and Eastern art, the vast coin collections and unique objects of historical interest. The Pitt-Rivers Museum has assembled a major scientific and ethnographic collection - from Hawaiian cloaks to shrunken heads. And throughout the colleges, the heart of the university, are a wide variety of paintings, sculptures and ornamental treasures from the Middle Ages to contemporar times. Christ Church College has one of the greatest collections of Old Master drawings, and a superb small collection of Old Master paintings. Other colleges have their own individual treasures : portraits of founders and benefactors, and beautiful furnishings in chapels and other buildings. Finally, we take a brief tour of the most recent additions to the Oxford scene - the Museum of Modern Art and the Oxford Museum. And, in what Mr. Piper calls 'a bonus to Oxford,' we go out to nearby Woodstock, for a look at Blenheim, one of the finest of England s great country homes. The Treasures of Oxford, beautifully illustrated in full colour and black- and-white, is a spirited survey of the wonders that have been collected in one of the most revered intellectual and cultural centres of the Western world." Near Fine in Near Very Good dustwrapper, the inside flaps of which are yellowed.
